Kitty,
Your situation sounds identical to mine! I was part of a would be colony for Delta Gamma, but the chapter never came to fruition. It always bothered me that I was never initaited into Delta Gamma. Now I am a Delta Gamma alumna initiate, and I couldn't be happier.
I have since graduated from college and am now attending law school at a school without a Tri Delta chapter.
I am still interested in Tri Delta and desire to be a member of this great organization.
I have written to nationals about my interest and have been told that I need a sponsor and an unanimous vote from the executive board. My problem is that I have since lost touch with the Tri Delta who was running my now disintegrated organization and I feel weird asking her for such a large favor. I would like to contact the New York alumnae chapter and possibly build a sponsorship that way. However, I wonder if that would seem innappropriate or an imposition. What do you all think?
Secondly, I was wondering if anyone knew how long it takes to gain approval by the executive board and whether it is very difficult.
I would write to DDD nationals and explain to them that you are no longer in touch with the TriDelta that you once knew. Perhaps Nationals can pave the way to introducing you to the New York Alumnae Chapter? You could also try taking matters into your own hands and contacting the New York Alumnae Chapter and tell them that you were part of a colony that never came to fruition as a chapter. I think you'd be pleasantly surprised. If you do contact the NY DDD alums, make sure that you are clear from the beginning that you are not an initiated Tri Delta member, but that you are seeking affiliation and would like to explore this with the alumnae chapter.
It is pretty well a universal thing with NPC groups that you will need a "sponsor" (think of it as a job with a "reference". A company would not hire you without checking your reference...well, a sorority would not initiate you without having a "reference" (i.e. sponsor) either.) However, on the alumnae initiates thread, there were some women who knew NONE of the alums. "Valkyrie" knew no Alpha Phis, and now she is one, and "Volgirl" knew no Alpha Xi Deltas and she is now one, too. So, you see, even if you aren't in contact with any Tri Deltas at present, I do believe that alumnae initiation CAN be done.
I am hoping that a Tri Delta will respond to this thread...maybe they will have an idea of what the NY DDD group is like and can put their "feelers" out there for you?!
Good Luck!
