U. Oklahoma booze ban is toothless
University Alerts Fraternities Before Searching For Alcohol
_
NORMAN, Okla. (AP) _ Fadi Balla never knows when officials may come to search the Pi Kappa Alpha for alcohol. It could be a Tuesday afternoon or 10 p.m. Friday night.
But the searches are never completely a surprise. Whatever day it is, officials at the University of Oklahoma are required to call before they arrive.
They enter through the front door and walk through all the common areas of the house, including hallways in the dorm wings and recreation rooms, scouting for any signs of alcohol, a stray beer can or an empty liquor bottle. They do not search members' rooms.
``The searches have been relatively painless,'' said Balla, president of the Pi Kappa Alpha chapter at the university. ``They don't invade people's privacy, they don't go in people's rooms or people's fridges. If you don't have anything to hide, then you're OK.''
One semester after the university banned alcohol in student housing in the wake of a freshman's alcohol-induced death, officials have searched all fraternity houses at least once and haven't found one single bottle of alcohol.
Critics say the ban is toothless because of the warning period that allows time for possible offenders to clean up any

They police officers have been doing the same thing at the University of Tennessee since my sophomore year in 2002. We got ranked #1 party school in the country my fresh. year and the school wanted to make sure that never happened again. The only difference is the officers do not call before they come over and they are not hesitant to write citations. The majority of the fraterntiies on the row get alcohol citations friday and saturday nights during the fall when the police randomly decide to wander in fraternity houses
As long as there are no kegs, a plethora of cases, or alcohol in an open place, then there's no problems. If the police start to dislike your fraternity and target your chapter, your in deep doo-doo. Thank god my chapter gets along with them.
Anyway, I don't blame the police, most of the officers are really cool guys that you can talk to for awhile and they are willing to help you out whenever. I think that our schools administration is ridiculous and you can say they do not give a crap about greeks. At a school with 30,000 people with the crappy houses we have compared to other SEC schools, the large amount of rules we have, and the wide police discretion allowed on a college campus is flat out ridiculous. I believe the officers should do their primary role of peacekeeping and the University should not make the officers have zero-tolerance policing.

Ryan400z,
I am not sure which way to go on this.
As a Police Officer, I always tried to be lenient and when back for College events I always tried to get a feel of what the Local Law Inforcements feelings were.
Most were pretty laid back. Well usually they were called on LOUD NOISE, Drunken Behavior ETC.
They for the most part were not really into raiding partys as at least they had enough sense to realize how much money was being put into the community.
But, when things get so out of hand, there is no option. The School cracks down and brings in the Police and they do their jobs, the Greek Community will die or be killed off by the School. Has been done before and will be done again unless We as Greeks come to our senses and grow up.\
It is amazing when some Schools throw Greeks completely off of Campus and other build Greek Courts or ask for Greeks of National Stature to come in.

Yeah, but some schools take patrolling parties too far. Baylor's cops seem to do a lot more with busting up parties near campus than they do at protecting students' cars the parking garage, so that's pretty ridiculous. People get broken into all the time, and where is DPS? Making sure people aren't wasted. What the banana?! I know we're a religious school, but I think "thou shalt not steal" is the one that made it in the top ten, NOT "thou shalt not party."
Oklahoma's situation seems pretty ridiculous, too. I mean, I don't know what to think of it--it's good to allow privacy, but if they're going to have a harsh policy like that (come on, folks, they're okies, they will drink anyway), it seems like it doesn't do too much aside from keep things quiet. But on the other hand, I guess quiet's a good thing? That's weird.

So did, "Thou shalt not kill."
While break ins are certainly annoying and a part of what police should protect against, I doubt there have been any deaths involved. If I had to make a choice, I might give a little more interest to making sure people aren't wasted as well.
In fact, I'll be any police force would show more interest in alcohol and drugs than break ins.
