Have you all watched the Winter Olympics? A sistah has won the gold...

Vonetta Flowers and her teammate won the Gold for the women's bobsled event on Tuesday.
She is the first black to win the gold EVER during the winter olympics.

People are noticing
I've watched the Winter Olympics off and on, and am also pleased with Mrs. Flowers winning the gold medal.
A couple of days ago, the Los Angeles Times ran an Associated Press story about minority Winter Olympians, and it mentioned figure skater Debi Thomas, who won a silver medal some years ago.

Yeah, I remember watching Debbi. I was at her because when she should have been focusing on preparing for the Olympics, she went and married "Oppie" . (What did I know, I was a kid ) So, she goes to the Olympics and busts her buttocks and gets the silver (I thought it was the bronze) . That's the year Katarina Witt won.
I think she and "Oppie" aren't together, but she did become a doctor.

I wonder whatever happened to that black figure skater from France? Man, i can not think of her name, but she was really good. I think in the last Winter games, she refused to accept the silver medal or something to that affect. Shoot, now I'm gonna have to do a net search for her.

I have NO idea how to spell it, but that was Surya Bonaly. She was an AMAZING athlete and she felt like she got stiffed. repeatedly. She used to do a backflip on the ice.
The problem is that she just wasn't as graceful as they like. If she had been white it might not have been a problem, but that wasn't going to cut it for her.
I always remember her because her Mom was white and used to give that girl ATROCIOUS make-up- just pastel pinks and all kinds of awful mess on her face. You could tell they didn't know how to handle "our" complexions. Poor girl!

Thanks lovelyivy..........
Here is a pic of her for those that might not remember.
I think she was adopted by those white folks or was it just her mom that was white http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Pagod...y/gallery.html

Surya (sp?) was adopted by those people in France. She does the professional thing now. You can find her on those Champions of Ice shows.
That hair and make-up was a hot mess.
She reminds me of (body type) of Serena Williams on skates. That girl could skate her buttocks off, but she wasn't as soror put it as graceful.
You know "they" made those same comments regarding Venus and Serena with their playing tennis.

She did get the bronze. That's when I got hooked on figure skating. I saw an interview with her a few days ago. She's now an orthopaedic surgeon.
And I stayed up until midnight last night to watch Michelle Kwan bust her butt and get a bronze medal. I was so upset. She's still my favorite figure skater.
