Angry opinions about greeks

I'm just wondering if this has happen to any of you out there. My professors are soo mean to greek students, i hate it!I go to a urban school, one of the best art school in the east coast. I'm an art student. Every since i pledged my wonderful sorority my professor grades me down and i had one tell me that i must have lost my creative ablity by doing the sorority. WHICH IS SOO NOT TRUE! I just dont' understand why professors what to make it harder for greek students. Has anyone ever had something like this happen? How did you deal with it?

Mary

At my college, the greek system is constantly being put down, and our officials would love for us to all go away, since having greeks somehow tarnishes our technical repuation as a top tier school. I think it's ridiculous! I joined Theta late in my college career, and I noticed a change in how my professors viewed me. I am in a technical major, dominated my nerdy males, and then there's me...outgoing, fun, party girl, but I get my stuff done! all I could do is just prove myself as an intelligent, competant student. I also wore my letters a lot less often, teachers just can't remember everything!

I wouldn't worry about it too much, just do your best, and that's all you can do!
Good luck

There could be all sorts of reasons for the negative stereotype, other students who the prof has seen behave badly, media stereotypes in film and the news or even bad experiences within the greek system when your prof was in school.

The root of all prejudice is ignorance, and the best way to fight ignorance is with education. Produce quality art not in spite of your GLO, but because of it.

Bink, I'm sorry that you've had problems with your Profs and I still can't believe you had one tell you that you lost creativity by joining your GLO!

Here is my $.02: I had a professor who I thought hated me. He always graded my papers really hard and questioned many of my comments in class. I assumed, for whatever dumb reason, that it was because I constanly wore letters to class and he just hated Greeks. Come to find out, he is an ADVISOR for one of the fraternities! My point is, it's one thing if a professor comes out and says something to you, but don't always assume it's because you are Greek.

Binks, What school do you go to? You never know what trips a trigger! He may have had a bad experience with a Greek Org. I had some expericences with my Profs, But sometimes I was older than they!
Have you sat with him and had a chat with him? May or not be good.
I remember one time I was out the nite before a law test drinking with my law prof. The next day he flinked out 6 jocks as they were out drinking in the same bar. They were pissed and said I was also out drinking in the same bar! The Prof. said, yes but we were also discussing LAW! I likend him to the TV show PAPER CHASE! I alwaayss love him for that! Of course he also told me if grades were on B---S S--T curve, I would have an A!!!! When I became Pres. Of the USA, I wanted him as the Cheif Justice of the Supreme Court. If your instructor is a real Man/Woman, he will tell you why you are a suckie for being in a Greek Org. If That is the case, OH,Oh!

Thumbs down

Binks -

Have professors actually said to you "your work has gone downhill since you pledged" or other specific references to your Greek affiliation?

If so, I would inform him/her that you will be reporting their behavior to the faculty review committee (or whatever they call the committee that deals with inappropriate faculty behavior). That is discrimination and harassment.

If they haven't said anything specific, just try to avoid those professors in the future.
