Student body Salary

Ok, I really didn't know where to put this, so I just stuck it here. We are having a big debate at my school right now. Apparently (and this is news to me) our ASWSU (student body) president gets paid $17,000 a year. and I guess this is about 3-5 thousand higher than most schools. It costs about $12,000 for the year to come here (tution, books, living expences, rent/room/food, etc..) so that's like $5,000 left over. The senate wanted to lower the salary, but it was shot down in a vote. Does anyone else have this at their school? If so, what are the salary differences?

If I knew it was a paid position, I would have ran too!!

Wow, I had no idea it was a paid position! So needless to say, I don't know what ours gets paid... Man, I feel like I've been missing out!

It has a survey of all student government salaries. 17k a year is not the highest.

It also shows how a rudimentary leadership magazine filled with gosh wow PC stuff can make great money

Interestingly enough, they are coveted positions because of prestige, pay, and contacts. They are so coveted that some campuses have political parties and spend thousands, maybe tens of thousands of dollars on elections.

But if you are the President of the student body at a school like that, and not a complete fluke, you can write your own ticket from it.

But how does that compare to the time college althetes put in, and all the revenue the school brings in from them?? I could see covering education related expenses but not actually making money on it.

Do all student government members get paid, or just the president??? So, what, do they consider it like work-study? Is it a scholarship?

We didn't get paid at Wittenberg (small lib arts school in Ohio). I served on Student Senate at my school, and it was a TON of work. Hardest position I held, of all the positions I held in undergrad. And with the most stress and the biggest headaches. Our Student Senate president wasn't 'visible,' either. And we took turns (or we were SUPPOSED to) manning the office. Most of the time, no one was in there. I guess on some campuses, it's just a bigger deal. The only time people were REALLY concerned with what Senate was doing was at budget time, since they were asking for funding. Now, we DID have a budget of money for SS, but it was used in case a campus org need extra funds or something like that. Or sometimes (during budget hearings) we would use money from that budget to pay for dinner, since we were there all friggin' night. I'm tellin' you, I don't miss those days one bit, lol.

I don't think Brown's student body leaders get paid. If they were, I'd imagine student government would be much more popular.

Georgia Tech's Student Body President gets $900 per semester. Not too shabby!

Actually, WSU has the highest public university salary. Only 4 other private university salary's beat it and we are about $5,000 higher than the next highest paying school, OSU, with $12,000. The debate isn't if they should get paid. They should. It's a lot of hard work and time to put into the job. The debate is whould they be paid less. If we could chop $5,000 off a salary, we could put that money towards funding other student progams.

But thank you very much for the website, I'm going to point it out to our own government.

My apologies, I stand corrected, I didn't realize after reading your initial post that you were differentiated between private and public schools in terms of salary.

Don't forget the perks also, they can be more valueable than money.

For my edification, could you please tell me which WSU, OSU, etc. you are talking about?

Wayne State, Washington State, Wright State? Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Oregon State?

WSU is Washington State University and OSU is Oregon State University... I'm on the west coast, so these are the only WSU and OSU that I know...

Also, just to let you know, I read more on the web site that you gave me, and it turns out that one year we were short in funding for some of the programs. So the president and the VP cut their salary by $750 each to keep the programs funded. So they know they have some sort of expendable $$...

At UF (University of Florida

) we pay our SG prez too. Not a whole lot though - I think $5000. If I remember right, VP and Treasurer get $ too. The theory is that they don't have time for a part time job and that position and school.

But the annoying thing is that our student body president for the last few years has almost always been some (geez I HATE to say this but it's TRUE) perfect stereotype of a "frat guy." i.e. financially secure.

Our current Prez drives a black Porsche.

And he needs SG money?

That's also the same Porsche that he got pulled over in a couple months ago, then FELL OUT when the cop opened the door.

You take your guess on the Breathalyzer result. He has a very good attorney (friend of daddy's) and somehow everything was magically ok and he's still in office. Way to be a role model, yeah!

My daddy teaches at a public middle school. Somehow I doubt my experience would be the same if I tried to pull that stunt.

And the way your SGA president got off suprised you? I grew up around (and can probably be considered as such) kids like that...I think some of them go to UF, even...

Wow! I was the student body VP and got $250 a month. Only for when we were in school. But you also couldn't have any other jobs.
I went to Emporia State University.
