NPC Expansion Presentations - information/attendance
Hopefully some of you can answer these questions regarding expansion and presentations:
- Does your sorority inform you (i.e. "general members") of presentations or do you only find out about expansion efforts once your sorority has been invited to colonize? (ignoring what you learn here on Greekchat)
- How is the presentation and/or expansion information received (social media, email, etc.)
- Are collegiate members and/or alumnae permitted to attend presentations?
- If so, are there certain circumstances when they would not be allowed to attend (per the sorority, school, and/or Panhellenic rules)?
- Have you attended a presentation as a "general member" (i.e. not a part of national staff or the presentation committee) before?
- Which presentation did you attend, and did you find it beneficial to your organization's efforts?
Any information provided would be helpful!

My group informs the local alumnae via a snail mail letter and notification to the local alumnae president, if there is one. If the school allows, they may attend. Otherwise, no, they may not. If the presentation team wants some local alumnae there at the presentation such as national officers who may not be on the presentation team, alumnae president, etc, they will individually invite them. I've attended several as I have been very active as an alum. Each was different because they were on vastly different campuses.

This can vary by the parameters set by the campus and its extension committee. I think it also varies depending on whether it's a recolonization, in which there may be particularly high interest on the part of alumnae from that chapter..
Sometimes there's an open invitation to the presentation, which is held in a large space, and we've rallied the troops to have local alumnae and even collegians from nearby chapters in the audience. A reception for local alumnae is often held the night before. Generally email is the easiest and quickest route for inviting alumnae, and the local alumnae chapter can help.
Sometimes the number of attendees is limited by the extension committee, because the presentations are more intimate or space doesn't allow an "open invitation." I was recently invited privately to attend a presentation where the number was limited to the presentation team and a few local alumnae (no collegians). As this was a recolonization, other alumnae were notified via email and the limit was explained, so that excited alumnae were kept in the loop even though they couldn't attend.
When alumnae can attend, it's great to show the university that your group has that local support, and it's important to build interest for future advisory support early by involving local alumnae and building enthusiasm.

I typically find out about the presentations when they are announced on our official Facebook page. We've had two presentations in town and the [general] alumnae were not notified directly. I found out through the grapevine and FB.

When the occasion does call for it, our alumnae are contacted directly via e-mail.

I'm not sure. I know alumnae are invited when it's allowed.

As others have pointed out, a lot of it depends on the campus preference.

I have been fortunate to attend two presentations and only local alumnae are invited (email) but only a limited amount are allowed to go per university. Otherwise, I generally do not find out about presentations/colonizations except through our FB page.
One of the university's had only one national sorority and was looking into expanding. The Greek Office sent out invites to the local Alumnae Panhellenic inviting us to hear presentations from three groups. Faculty, alumnae (affiliated/non-affliated), and other on-campus sorority and fraternity members were allowed to listen to the presentations.

Just answering what I know of - hopefully a different point of view than what's already been expressed on here!
- Have you attended a presentation as a "general member" (i.e. not a part of national staff or the presentation committee) before?
Yes! I was lucky enough to be one of the members able to attend a presentation as a collegian. (For any sisters who remember it, it was when ADPi was presenting at Northern Kentucky University!) It was a ridiculously fascinating experience - we were able to read through all of the materials and watch the presentation as if we were new members again on Bid Day. I do wish we'd been able to interact more with the Panhellenic officers and answer any of their questions - they had 2 other collegians from 2 different chapters present some info about their chapter life & general activities, but there wasn't really a Q&A time.
- How is the presentation and/or expansion information received (social media, email, etc.)
We were reached out to via email, through our chapter president. (Looking back at the email, I think a couple of local alumni were cc'ed as well + our chapter advisor.) Also, we were asked to send about 10 people total.
- Does your sorority inform you (i.e. "general members") of presentations or do you only find out about expansion efforts once your sorority has been invited to colonize? (ignoring what you learn here on Greekchat)
General members & most alumni seem to find out about colonization efforts via social media after we get the invitation to colonize. (I've not been in an area where ADPi is looking to colonize as an alum, so no idea on alumni outreach as of yet!)
