Greek Unity

I want to know what sorors and greeks think about the idea of greek unity. What do you think it is important ingredient in having greek unity.

I know that this may have been discussed before but I am using this to prepare information for undergraduates.

Thank you

SoRhor,

Where do I begin with this familiar topic? I think that it does exist on some campuses, however, a lot of bglos are struggling to survive so they feel that they must place most of their time and energy on maintaining the policies and procedures of their perspective organizations. Let's face it on many of our historically white campuses African Americans (students) are just trying to survive or stay a float.

When I was an undergraduate soror (SGRho) my chapter got along with practically all of the greeks because we were known as those scholarly ladies that did a lot of community service and could put on a nice step show. We worked well with other bglos and independents. Even on the stepshow stage the only thing that the other sororities could come up with was and I quote "where do you ladies come from or Sigma gamma what?" The other sororities never could come up with anything really unkind to say about us. And when I was an undergrad there was always 9 to 14 sorors in the chapter.

I hope that this answers your question! Since I see several people reading, however, they are too shy to respond!

I think greek unity exists and I believe in greek unity...You will come across some people who don't believe in greek unity... That's their business and I don't waste my time being around them. My pet peeve is someone hating on an org for no particular reason....If you have something against a person don't blame it on the org because that organization didn't do anything to you... That's my 1922 cents on the topic.

Greek Unity

I think that nothing bad can come out of African-Americans, or any group of people working together towards the common goal of improving our communities. I have been guilty of assuming negative things about a certain organization because most of the members I have observed in public (including on GC) don't exhibit enough class to merit all humans with the basic dignity and respect that they deserve, especially their own African-American sisters. That's not right, but I am working on it because one of my closest friends is a member of this group.

I also try to treat people with respect because I serve a God who does not care how many pearls and rubies we wear.

Think about it. It really does not make any sense for anyone to ever feel entitled to be rude to others because he or she belongs to a certain org. Are we not all human? Did not all of our founders face the same humiliating social circumstances no matter how much money they had or how light their skin or how long their hair? If the lynch mob came around, they would not have cared whether our founders or their kind wore pink, red, pure white, royal blue or gold. Maybe some day others will get it and live up to the most noble intentions of their founders. I am proud to say that the vast majority of my sorors do.

i would really like to see more greek unity in my area.

my sorors and i try to promote other greeks, support them at their events and functions. however, we don't see the same thing in return,(not just with us, but with other organizations)

a lot of time, younger greeks have the mentality that if it is not about my organization then it is not important. we as greeks seem to forget that we are all working towards a common purpose.

we get caught up on petty differences.

also a lot of greeks (sad but true) still promote stereotypes among ourselves. we have to learn how to accept who we are as a Historically Black Greek family and not what people on the outside see us as. No Greek organization has all members who are one way. We have to embrace our differences and respect each other's history.

once we get past this then we are a little closer to greek unity.

Thumbs up I love you ALL!

Well I'm glad to say that we all support one another at my school. Its common to see us attend events sponsored by other orgs (There are 6 orgs represented on campus).
I think its also good when GDIs see our interaction. It gives them a more positive picture of greek life and they see that just because you want to join one organization doesn't mean you can't hang out with members of another.

Basically we are all striving for the same things. We should work together on a local and national level more often.

I too wish...

My campus has to be the unfriendliest campus I know of, okay maybe I'm exaggerating but it feels that way. Here, people tend to be extremely spiteful and malicious towards each other, and we can not afford that with 3 BGLOs and 8 collective members on a predominantly white campus that doesn't really understand us in the first place. The problem is that people tend to extend their personal problems to include the entire organization.
I'm am extremely disheartned by this because when I go back home and am among my high school friends, who are members of all 9 NPHc orgs, there's so much love and respect, it's beautiful I just wish that could be replicated onmy campus

Wink The irony...

The ironic thing about all of this is that the Greeks pretty much got along when I was in school. Most of the nastiness I have encountered was from supposed grown-ups who had graduated from college. I still support everyone's projects when I can, though.

Sorors and Sisterfriends,

Some of the responses are very sad but true in many cases! You would think that members of the bglos would really unite on the white campuses because they're so few in number, however, they act like crabs in a barrel clawing trying to get to the top! We really need to "wake up" that was the only thing good that I really got from Spike Lee's "School Daze."

I attended and graduated (smile) from an predominately white school and an HBCU and black folks are just so much more united or rather they give off the appearance that they are willing to work together at an HBCU.

Greek Unity

I think Greek Unity does exists, but it all depends on the culture of ones campus etc. And if you are willing to make friends with other Greeks, and leave the petty stuff behind. Now I admit when I first crossed..I had so much blue and gold in my closet, it was a shame!! And I Loved being an SGRho, but never did it stop me from talking to other Greeks etc. I think that most who are not Greek, are usually the ones who think we just talk to only our sorors and dog out other Greeks. Now..not every Greek is going to be cool to you. I have met my share of rude ones..but in my mind those are the ones who let the colors make them and not the other way around. And like was already said, this goes on after graduation (Unity and No-Unity). So age is truly nothing but a number, when it comes to a persons behavior.

Last Sunday our greek community got together and had an interactive greek summit. Each sorority and fraternity were required to be there. We then broke up into 6 different groups and each group had a certain goal all about uniting our greeks etc. It was really helpful actually. Also just by doing that and being in our groups I met quite a few new people from different fraternity's and sororitys so theres a start at getting unity =)
