Sorority Sisters attending Fraternity Smokers?
I just have a really random quesion -- on my campus, it's pretty common for the girls to go to the guys' smokers to 'encourage' everyone attending. some groups will even have a sister speak during the smoker, stating what the guys mean to us, how great they are etc. Not all the boys do this (actually, now that i think about it, i think they all do) -- but only certain sororities are invited -- usually the groups that are most often paired together (i.e. the tke's and the tri-sigma's on my campus) is this pretty normal? i already know our greek system is pretty messed up overall, and because we are so small, things are very different (5 fraternities, 1 local - 4 sororities, 1 local) With smokers coming up, and me being able to attend them this semester -- i had to work during two of them last semester, and i didn't want to go to just a couple i was just wondering how common this is
sorry for the rambling

Back when I was in school, it was pretty common to invite sorority members to the fraternity smokers. As you mentioned, it was usually the two houses what were "closest" to each other or were paired together for Greek Week or what have you.
Several of my sisters and I went to several smokers at SAE and, while we weren't asked to get up and speak, we circulated with the rushees and tried to learn a little about them then introduced them to brothers we thought they might have things in common with.
I think we were probably invited more for window dressing than anything else, but it was a lot of fun and I was glad to help out a great bunch of guys!

What is a smoker? Sorry if this is something obvious; I've just never heard the word. Thanks

like i said - my campus is messed up - obviously - i mean while as an organization we are using the pc terms such as new member, i still use pledge - as does most of my campus
a smoker is generally a informal (or formal - depends on the group, and time of year) rush party for guys.
i guess "smoker" sounds more masculine or something

we do our smoker event every semester with Alpha Phi - we've done it forever, and it's a great rush event, always gets the best turn-out. Basically, a dry, semi-formal mixer at the Castle, a beautiful on-campus reception area. Perfect rush environment.

The fraternities on this campus generally invite all the sororities to their smoker parties, but as far as which sororities show up at which parties, it seems to go along with the ones who hang out with whichever fraternity more often.

Its a leftover term fromanother era. It was the male equilivelant of the sorority tea. While teas are still held by local Panhels - smokers have evolved into an experience unique to each chapter/school. At my school, we are the only ones who have a smoker. (FIJI's used to...) anyway, we play poker and chat. back in the day we used to have ladies from the sororities be "name tag chicks" and "drink chicks." A few years ago our IFC agreed to go chick free at rush, so not there cant be any women at our functions. Sucks, but some groups were abusing the lack of policy. You know the drill.... one group's gotta screw it up for the rest of us....

sweethearts
I think all of our fraternities held smokers, and they usually had their sweethearts and lil' sisters there, but that was it. I think that was the only time there were any girls at guys' rush events, or vice-versa.

Somewhat like what SilverTurtle said, the guys who wanted us (ZTA) to come out the most were Sigma Chi because their sweetheart is a Zeta, and a lot of their Big Sisters are Zetas.

At my school the fraternities had rush hostesses/little sisters who attended their smokers. They did not invite a whole sorority to attend or have any of the women speak. The R.H./L.S.s were usually a mixture of all of the sororities and some GDIs.

LIfe is right, the term Smoker comes from another era, but he didn't share the whole story with you . . .
In days past Smokers involved smoking, but also a lot of alcohol and girls of a more promiscious nature . . . that were usually encouraged to shed most if not all of their clothing . . . equivalent of a Sorority Tea my ass. . . lol those would be pretty risque Teas and would probably have Chipendales there . . . I have this mental image of a bunch of highly attractive genteel southern women sipping tea and sticking dollw bills down some big sweaty chippendales g-string
So BrownEyedGirl, you seem the epitome of a nice genteel Southern Lady. . . I am surprised you would be the female component of such Smokers . . .

Well, dahlin', I can assure you nothing of that nature would evah take place down here!! Seriously, though, where'd they ever find these girls?? I can't comprehend anyone getting excited about a rush event at which she was encouraged to take off "most if not all of" her clothes!!
