Cal State Trustees Raise Scenario of Transfer-Only University System

"Could California State University one day limit enrollment to transfers, admitting burgeoning numbers of community college students but turning away new freshmen?

The idea sounds far-fetched, but that scenario was raised Tuesday by trustees who cautioned that insufficient state funding could radically reduce the mission of the nation's largest university system.

The warning came during a discussion of the preliminary 2015-16 budget, which predicted growing demand for the 23-campus system. The Cal State system drew a record 761,000 applications for the fall 2014 term...."

Continued at: http://www.latimes.com/local/educati...910-story.html

The scenario looks more like a scare tactic to get more funding, but if this ever happened, there would be many, many Greek orgs severely affected by it. There are only three Cal State campuses without Greek life (Maritime, Channel Islands, Monterey Bay).

Anyone know which do and do not have housing?

I wonder if NPC would come up with some sort of system where the women could rush in their sophomore year (still in the CC's) and then move right in the beginning of junior year.

I always thought the Cal Polys were separate from the UCs and CSUs. Learned something new!

Transferring is so common in CA that I could see this working at a school or two but not the entire system. I know when San Marcos opened they didn't take freshman at first.

I can't imagine that this would happen with the whole system. Individual campuses, though, maybe. A selective, residential campus like San Diego or Long Beach would be gutted by this kind of move. A Los Angeles or San Bernardino would be able to adapt much more readily.

I'd think that not spreading it across the whole system would defeat the purpose.

On another note, holy I can't believe how old Jerry Brown is. That makes me feel old too.

That would involve the students gaining admission to the campus at which they are rushing prior to recruitment and getting a bid. Unlike programs such as the Blinn Team system in Texas, California community college students are not (generally) guaranteed transfer placement at a particular campus. So, you'd have a San Diego Community College girl rush at San Diego State, get a bid, initiate.....and then not get into SDSU as a transfer.

I was thinking the end of sophomore year, when they'd already been accepted, or I guess early August with a move-in like Washington.

Hrm...I can't speak for other campus locations; but, I was one of the people who admitted transfer students at San Diego State University. Students who had already cleared all transfer admission checkpoints (GPA, min. number of units, all major prep completed and the Golden 4 basic GE classes done, etc) were offered "final" admission right up front - usually around January/February of sophomore year. Those students would be eligible to do early recruitment in this scenario; but, it would only be 1-semester early. However, for the vast majority of students who were finishing up their requirements at the end of sophomore year, we would wait until ALL final grades from spring came in before finalizing our admissions offers. That means that many of our students didn't clear final admission until June. That puts a wrench in the works of the idea posted - sophomores rushing ahead of time. If they're not even admitted until June, then they should just rush as juniors in August like how it's currently done.

I dunno...you and others bring up good points. Considering how very different our campuses are, I wonder how this would be implemented across the CSU as a whole.

I'm not sure - that's why I put "NO?" with a question mark. For CSUN, I had to go to their chapter websites to check and none of them seemed to outright show a picture of their house or make reference to "house tours" or anything. Some photos appeared to be inside houses; but, were non-descript and could have been homes of alumnae.

ETA: I just found a YouTube video for Tri Delta at CSUN where they clearly show a house with Tri Delta letters on the front of the house. An AOII video doesn't show a house; but, the video does show shots of a room with a composite on the wall. So, if those two have houses, then that means that there are probably others. I changed CSUN to "YES".
