ISIS Releases Execution Video of American Journalist James Foley, Threatens Execution of Journalist Steven Joel Sotloff

By Taylor Wofford
Filed: 8/19/14 at 6:10 PM | Updated: 8/20/14 at 12:05 PM

"A video released Tuesday by militant Islamic extremist group ISIS which depicts the violent execution of a man alleged to be missing American journalist James Foley is authentic, according to Caitlin Hayden, a spokeswoman for the National Security Council. Foley was kidnapped in Syria last year while working for Agence France Presse. AFP has no comment at this time, AFP’s Chief Editor for North America told Newsweek in a phone interview. Its team in the Middle East is still investigating, he said."

It's now being reported that another American journalist, Steven Sotloff, has also been beheaded:

I hate to sound callous, but I would be outraged if anyone funded the ransoms being sought here. These journalists knew full well the risks of what they were doing. They should be prepared for all outcomes, including this.

I have been reading up on this, and in some instances, other countries ARE paying ransoms, and people are coming home safely (not everyone is a journalist either). The whole situation is terrible, and a side effect of us going to so many countries to deal with so many things.

RIP to both of those gentlemen.

I tend to agree with this, but at the same time - these men are sons, fathers, brothers, uncles, friends.. NOBODY deserves this kind of brutal death. ISIS is an awful, evil terrorist group that needs to be dealt with.

RIP to both of them and prayers to their family and friends.

Now I wonder if Obama will actually act.

That's just not a rational approach to this if what you value is American lives. The only way to deal with this issue is a major international occupation of the Middle East in a long-term, multi-decade, nationbuilding capacity. Nothing short of that is going to amount to a hill of beans.

So unless you think spending thousands of lives of our young people and those from other countries who might pitch in, there are no half-measures which are going to fix what's wrong over there.

Yesterday on NPR's Here and Now: http://hereandnow.wbur.org/2014/09/0...ting-tom-peter

rant/
I find it problematic that people's worth is defined through relations to other people. These people's existences and lives should be valued independent. What if these people's parents were deceased? What if these people don't have children? What if these people don't have siblings? What if these people don't have people they consider friends? Would their existence and torture be less important? Don't worry about them, they have no one to weep on their behalf.
/end rant
