Thumbs up Aggieland Recruitment

Bid Day is today so I will begin my daughter's recruitment story now and work on it as I have time this week.

Please forgive me if I use some wrong terminology. I was not Greek and only know what I learned here and I don't have the best memory.

There are 12 NPC sororities on campus. All of them are amazing chapters and have beautiful houses on the row. Total last year was around 200, Quota last year if I remember right was 49 freshman and 18 upperclassmen. Panhellenic is thinking total this year will be around 85 based on previous placement rates and 1400 PNM's

The houses on campus are:

Alpha Chi Omega
Alpha Delta Pi
Chi Omega
Delta Delta Delta
Delta Gamma
Delta Zeta
Gamma Phi Beta
Kappa Alpha Theta
Kappa Delta
Kappa Kappa Gamma
Pi Beta Phi
Zeta Tau Alpha

We are from a family of Die Hard Aggies so I am going to name the sororities after Aggie Icons or Traditions. I haven't even assigned them to a particular sorority so they are in no particular order. I'll be back after today's festivities to start the story.

Kyle Field
Olsen Field
Reveille
Fish Camp
Silver Taps
Muster
Academic Plaza
Corps of Cadets
Bonfire
MSC
G Rollie
Century Tree

I just got back from Bid day and it was an amazing experience. I have not seen such a genuine smile on my daughter in years.

Ok, back to last Monday.

She lives with 3 other girls and they are all going through Recruitment. There is currently a little tension in the apartment over a party last week so it's going to be an interesting week. 4 girls in recruitment plus walking on egg shells at the apartment.

My DD has a couple of houses in her mind based on what she has heard but knows not to make any decisions based on the hearsay. I have found out since she has completed the process she did have one she really wanted in the beginning because she didn't want to hurt feelings of a relative. But she let that leave her mind once everything got going.

She attended 7 houses on the first open house day.

First was Corps of Cadets she knew one girl in this house. The girls she visited with were nice although the main girl she talked to knew very little about TAMU. That bothered my DD. In her mind everyone should know all about TAMU and all its traditions. She has heard that this is the party house but she knows to form her own opinion. Nothing she has seen today makes her think that is true. She wouldn't mind returning here but it's the first house and she does not know what is still to come.

Next was Reveille - She had great conversations at Reveille and talked to many girls. The conversation flowed and never felt forced. She would love to return here.

The 3rd house of the day was Kyle Field - Lots of girls in her Rho Gamma group want to go here. She had a great visit and would be willing to go back she had nice conversations with more than one girl.

4th house - Olsen FieldShe was really surprised here. She visited with several officers and had an amazing conversation. She really wants to return here.

5th house - Fish Camp from what I have learned now she really wanted Fish Camp to be her home. She only talked to one girl though and they didn't really hit it off. She was very disappointed after this party and was very confused by the way the party went.

6th house - Muster - Although she was hot and tired she was excited for this house. It was nearing 100 degrees with tons of humidity. She was amazed at this house, it was a beautiful building and the women there were lovely too. She met the President and two VP's and had fabulous conversation with everyone. She left this house believing this could be her home for life.

7th house - Bonfire ---- She felt like she was at Bonfire. The sun was blazing and she was ready for the day to be over. She had woken up at 5 am and it was nearing 3 pm. She's just ready to be done. She walked into Bonfire and was greeted by the little of one of the only girls she knows that is Greek at TAMU. She then talked to a couple of VP's and got to wave at her friend. It seemed that everyone knew her name and as she was leaving they were all calling her name as she left the house.

This long day is finally over. I got more details than I expected from her. She did want to see her mom. She was really funny because she said "I want to see you, but I don't want you to have to drive over." Ok what's a mom to do? drive an hour and make the daughter happy or come home and read greek chat. I drove the hour, took her chick-fil-a and laid down with her and got her to relax. She was very stressed out.

Open House Day 2 - worn out already but ready to see the rest of the houses.

MSC My daughter really wanted to give this chapter a chance she went in with an open mind but did not feel at home in this house. It held open house differently than the other houses. They spoke with one girl and then were seated in a room and the President spoke to them. She didn't really feel like she got to know the girls in the chapter.

Academic Plaza - I expected a lot of info from this house but all I got from her was they are okay.

Silver Taps - She visited with several girls and had decent conversation but there were lags in it and it felt a little forced. She did not like this one as much as the others.

G Rollie White - She felt at home here and could see her self in this chapter. She talked to several girls that have similar interest. She was able to talk to at least one officer.

Century Tree - She had neither a positive or negative feeling at this house. She wouldn't mind returning to this chapter to learn more about them.

Open house is over and she is ready to rank. She has a couple of clear favorites already although I have advised against this. There are a couple she just felt a better fit with than others.

She ranked them

1.Bonfire
1. Muster
1. Olsen Field
1. G. Rollie White
1. Kyle Field
1. Fish Camp
1. Reveille
1. Century Tree
1. Academic Plaza
10.Corps of Cadets
11. Silver Taps
12. MSC

Having favorites is ok. Allowing those favorites to cloud an open mind to opportunities is not.

Yep. The girls who seem the happiest at the end of it all are the ones who can develop new favorites from the invitations they have.

I'm back. She came home this afternoon to see her dogs so I couldn't really spend time writing the next part of the story.

Philanthropy Day - 9 parties - she studied each group over the summer so that she would be aware of both their National and Local Philanthropies.

They aren't supposed to text but everyone knows they do. She sent me a message that said 9 - well of course I wanted more information than that. A couple of hours later she told me she was cut by Academic Plaza, G Rollie White, and Kyle Field. These are all sororities that most likely have a lot of legacies and have to make heavy cuts. This is where being from a small town with no connections may have hurt her. She really wasn't bothered by these cuts because she still has a full schedule.

9 Parties

Fish Camp she really wants to like this chapter and today they moved up the list a little. She still only talked to one girl but she really likes the Philanthropy of this group.

MSC even though this chapter is not one of the strongest on campus my DD loves the philanthropy for this group. However, after visiting more with this group today she still does not feel like she fits with this group of women.

Reveille my DD would be fine returning here and had great conversation but she's not quite sure if they are for her.

Bonfire - she is falling more in love with this chapter. The philanthropy for this group fits in with a group her entire family is heavily involved with. Yesterday there were 3 groups that were stacked at the top with no real preference. Today Bonfire has pulled away a little.

Corps of Cadets -She had ranked this group in her bottom 3 on Tuesday but had a better visit today. She visited with a couple of really sweet women here. She's still not sure if she fits in here. However, she likes their philanthropy.

Silver Taps - The visit here just seemed forced and there was a lot of dead time. She will rank this in her bottom three again today.

Century Tree - This group dropped from the first day and she will rank them in her bottom three. There just not good conversation at all today. They were almost in the bottom 3 yesterday and Corps of Cadets improved today.

Olsen Field - This group fell off a little today because my daughter does not see herself taking part in the philanthropy. It's not that she doesn't believe in it or doesn't like it, she just does not think it fits with her personality. It's hard to explain but I agree 100%.

Muster - this group separated itself into the top two today with Bonfire. She still spoke to several officers and really likes this group and is her favorite philanthropy. She talked about a dear friend that was affected by the cause this group supports.

This was a day that would never end. Finally ranking at about 9 pm

1. Bonfire
1. Muster
1. Olsen Field
1. Fish Camp
1. Reveille
1. Corps of Cadets
10. Century Tree
11. Silver Taps
12. MSC

She get's to sleep in a little tomorrow and is ready to see if she will have another full schedule. The stress is starting to get to her. She shed a few tears tonight just from sheer exhaustion and stress.

I will post Skit day tomorrow morning and try to do pref day tomorrow night. I don't get the day off so I'll have to actually get some work done at some point.
