Bitter and angry alumni
I need some help from my sisters. We have a certain alumnae who is very bitter and angry at us. (LOOONG story as to why). She graduated last year and is still residing in the town and maintains close ties with some active sisters.
THe problem is this: she is trying to find ways to get us into trouble with headquarters. She just recently called the boss of the place where one of the active sisters bartends (a country club, very respectable and she is 21) and told the manager that the sister was illegally employed because under AZD policy she could not do bartend. There are so many things wrong with that that I can't even begin to start in on it. Needless to say, Alpha Xi can say nothing about your employment unless you are selling drugs or prostituting yourself. anyways, the manager becomes extremely upset calls our chapters president and says that we can't use the country club anymore and that the sister will be let go. Luckily, our president got the situation straigtened out and no one lost a job or country club priveledges but please!
and it goes on!! THis certain alum is also spreading rumors that we are in trouble with nationals. Which we are not. She is threatening to turn us in for a party we will be hosting in a few weeks. WHich she has no grounds to because we follow FIPG and the CARE contract.
The point of my tirade is this. THe alumnae in NOT in good standing with the chapter. She owes a substantial amount of money and refuses to pay. My question is, what can be done to stop this person from getting us in trouble, messing up peoples lives, and generally messing up our reputation.

Hi,
I am not a member of a GLO, but maybe you should report HER to nationals (and your local grad chapter)and state the reasons why she has become a threat to both your chapter, its members, and to the national body (ie owes dues, her actions to date, etc.)? Hopefully this might help.

If she owes the chapter money she should not be in good standing. She shouldn't even be allowed to go alum. (Although I don't know the circumstances of the money - are we talking dues or what?)
Unfortuntunately, there is not much one can do about alums. Once you've graduated, you can pretty much do whatever you like. There are no standards boards or new financial obligations or anything.
However, the money is probably the hook. I presume the chapter has tried to collect on it. At this point, the FVP/prez should call FHQ and explain that she owes money. Her behavior doesn't even have to be brought up - yet. At best she pays up and spends the rest of her life being bitter - but hopefully eventually she'll find other people to annoy. At worst it goes to court. Luckily, members sign a contract to pay their financial obligations, so you and Nationals have a legal leg to stand on.
Of course, none of this will make her any happier, and if she's decided to be a b**** she's not likely to change her mind and start being sweet again. Perhaps the threat of having her Quill yanked by Nationals would be enough to get her to shape up. Perhaps not. But I think it's definitely time that FHQ, the local alum group (if she's active in it) and your advisors know about it.

agreed, FuzzieAlum. If this women owes money to the chapter, then the chapter has in place a process to recover it or terminate her. Use the IN process!! Get the process started and follow it through to termination and collection agency.
Also, have your chapter president talk to your area fac. to make sure the chapter's side of the story gets on record.

If she owes dues, Nationals should already know about it, especially if she is not that recent of an alumnus. If for some reason they don't know, notify Nationals, they will help you clear this up. We have a financial situation with alumnae all the time and Nationals is very helpful. Find out who you need to be talking to and give them a call. Good Luck!
P.S. I know how you feel....one of our own active sisters called Nationals and told them a bunch of stories that got us put on probabtion. We did break some rules, but you should have heard the stories Nationals relayed back to us! Very depressing to have this come from your own sister. We're still in the process of getting our charter returned to us. She's alum now, but when she was active she had some vendetta against us. It's been very difficult to bear. Again, good luck!
