Problem with SAC...

What do you do when the Student Activities Coordinator at your school doesn't like local organizations?

The new SAC came to a Greek Council meeting the other night and pretty much told everyone that she was against locals and didn't want them on campus anymore. She also claimed that she was meeting with lawyers to take some sort of action againt us. I think she is bullshitting everyone. I guess someone asked if it had anything to do with us dropping out of our local Panhellic Council and she wouldn't respond.

There are only 6 organizations on campus: 1 national fraternity (Theta Chi), 2 national sororities (Delta Phi Epsilon & Phi Sigma Sigma), 1 local sorority (Alpha Theta Chi), 1 local fraternity (Kappa Delta Xi), and 1 LGBT fraternity (Lambda Delta Chi). Cutting locals out of the picture would bring the number down to 3 recognized Greek organizations.

Any suggestions?

Where did she go to school? If it was a school where there were no locals, she might not understand that they are as "legit" as national groups. (as we saw on the Sorority Life threads)

You guys have been around and contributed to the campus for a long time - let her know that. It wouldn't hurt to get the alumnae involved if she starts being a real beeyotch about it.

Good luck.

If it's a publci university, she can't do shit so don't worry. If she claims that she is "getting lawyers" she's lying. How can someone limit the greek orgs to only nationals on a public university campus? On top of that, she would have express reasons to get the locals kicked off of campus. Simply "not liking" locals doesn't count and could be viewed as discriminatory.

I'd throw that bit back in her face and if she continues, tell her that you are retaining legal counsel as well. Just for the hell of it, brign a tape recorder and record what she says whenever you can.

If you think about it, she doesn't like locals, big deal, she can't get them booted off campus for that. That's like her saying she doesn't like a certain race and therefore she is getting lawyers to get them booted from campus. It won't happen.

I know that they can't kick us off campus due to the fact that we are local and it is a public university...but where do I find material to back this up?

I found this in the University Student Handbook.

"Students are free to organize and join associations, and conduct business in their own interest. Student organizations have the right to establish membership requirements, qualifications for office, and rules of procedures for operation within the guidelines established by Student Government. University facilities are reasonably available so far as their primary use for educational purposes permit, on a non-discriminatory basis, to registered student organizations."

That's all that you need. You are a local sorority - you have the right to organize. This woman is talking out of her rearend. Send her that little paragraph with a nice "phuck you but have a nice day."
