Hi!
Hey! I just wanted to introduce myself. I'll be a freshman at PSU in August (yes I know it's a long time, but I'm SO excited!). And I've decided to participate in rush. I'm wondering whether or not I should try formal rush, in the fall, or informal in the spring. Will it be too much to handle if I jump right into it at the beginning of my freshman year? And I just wanted to say that this site is awesome! Everyone is so informative and basically all of my questions have been answered from reading all the posts, thanks!!

Also, if anyone has any info on greek life at Penn State that they'd care to share, I'd be grateful! Thanks a bunch!

I would suggest doing formal rush for the experience. Jump right in, girl. It's a wonderful comfort and transition mechanism when you move away to college to be affiliated. I'll have to get back to you on the chapters that they have at PSU. But it's refreshing to see someone new who is just beginning her/his college journey!

I agree - formal recruitment is the way to go especially if you are a freshman. One some campuses, the competition is strong and you will have your best opportunities as a freshman. Best of luck to you! Sincerely, Martha

Definitely do formal recruitment! It's so much more exciting and will be a great way to dive into campus life. From everything I've gathered about PSUs Greek System, they have almost every sorority in the NPC on campus, so you'll have a lot to choose from! My boyfriend's best friend's gf goes there and just pledged GPhiB, and she loves it! Good luck and keep posting on GC! I guarantee this will help you have a good idea of what to expect!

Hey guys! Thanks a lot for the advice. I was alittle reluctant to rush my freshman year just because... well I don't really know why! But I might as well start my college career off with a bang!!!! I'll make sure to keep you informed of my rush experiences when in starts in September!!!

PSU has a great Greek Life website: http://www.greeks.psu.edu/ and a nice Panhellenic website: http://www.greeks.psu.edu/panhellenic/.
They have 21 sororities:
Alpha Chi Omega
Alpha Omicron Pi
Alpha Delta Pi
Alpha Phi
Alpha Xi Delta
Alpha Sigma Alpha
Chi Omega
Delta Delta Delta
Delta Gamma
Delta Zeta
Gamma Phi Beta
Lambda Delta Omega
Kappa Alpha Theta
Kappa Delta
Kappa Kappa Gamma
Phi Mu
Pi Beta Phi
Sigma Delta Tau
Sigma Sigma Sigma
Sigma Kappa
Zeta Tau Alpha
I recommend that you go through Formal Recruitment as a freshman, it opens up your options and unlike informal recruitment, gives you an opportunity to learn about all the chapters.
Good Luck!

Formal vs. Informal
GO for the Formal Rush. On our campus, fraternities have informal rush all year long. We don't have a week where we get to sit back and let them come to us. Seeing the sororities do it every year not only looks fun for them, but looks a lot more orginized and lets you get a better feel of the system before deciding which one is best for you.
p.s. Go to the University of Washington instead of Penn

That's a lot of sororities!!
I agree with everyone else - definitely do formal rush. It will give you a chance to meet women from all the sororities and (hopefully) find the right one for you right away. If you wait for informal rush, your options will be more limited.
Good luck!

Yes, PSU has all but one NPC group. Go for it! I was terrified and did it....and loved it. COBing is great too, but if you've got the chance, go for it. Plus, PSU is very competitive and you can't guarantee anyone will have spots open after formal recruitment.

Definitely go through formal recruitment! Some of my fondest Phi Mu memories are from my first semester, freshman year.... when I was a brand new member. It will certainly enhance your college experience and help integrate you into student life! I have met so many incredible people through being Greek and you will too

Formal recruitment has been one of the best memories of my freshman year so far! If you have the opportunity to go through it why not try it. If you find that formal rush isn't for you, you can always withdraw and go through COB.
Good Luck!

Actually, they're missing AST, D Phi E, AGD, Phi Sigma Sigma, A E Phi and Theta Phi Alpha (although I hear there are some Theta Phi's trying to get the chapter back on campus).
I agree with everyone else - go for it! Penn State Main is soooo big, it will at least help you to get acclimated somewhat. If you start thinking about it and researching some of the groups now, it might not be as overwhelming. There are several PSU Greeks on here and hopefully they'll come out of the woodwork to help you . Good Luck in Happy Valley!
