Recruitment From The Rho Gamma Side

Hey everyone!
So this was my first formal recruitment not as a PNM, and I was lucky enough to be a Rho Gamma for it! I had so much fun watching the girls find their homes and guiding them through the recruitment process.

Sunday Night: We started the night off with the cover of Anna Kendricks Cup Song that I previously posted, and then read guidelines, the pillars of greek life, the anti hazing laws, and introduced ourselves. From there we broke into groups. There were 84 girls registered for recruitment on the first night, and I had about 20 in my group. There were 6 upperclassmen and the rest freshmen, so it was exciting to meet new girls. The girls didn't have as many questions as I thought they would - it was mostly the upperclassmen going through again asking questions.

Monday: Round robin night was very fun. I loved seeing each organizations parties. Our first party was Hollywood themed, the second had a Disney themed recruitment, the third no clear theme, and the fourth a wizard of oz theme. Our girls were very excited for every party, and I got to have a nice chat with the TLC at the first party who happened to be an alum of my college!

Tuesday: We saw the first two parties for an hour each for philanthropy night. I had my first girl drop out of recruitment this night, and a girl come to me to talk about her decision. They don't rank at all until after preference so I told her to wait and see what preference invites she got before worrying too much. We also had to collect cell phones this night as we heard they were a problem the night before.

Wednesday: This night was the same as Tuesday. The girls started to get anxious about receiving invites to preference parties the next day.

Thursday: I got to stand in the office and help hand out invitations to preference parties. This was very exciting to me, as I got to see where each girl was going early And the excitement on their faces was so sweet, it helped me get even more excited for bid day! Releasing girls was hard though. I was supposed to warn the director of greek life when I saw them at the front of line, so we could all prepare. There were girls who didn't have grades left in the mix as well, and they were released for that reason.

That night I attended Chi Omega's preference party, and was supposed to take a group to Zeta Tau Alpha, but I ended up stuck in the greek life office watching girls who only got one invite sign preference cards. This night I got to counsel a girl through her decision between two organizations. it made me feel good that I could help them make such an important decision.

Afterwards, I went to sit in the waiting room with the other Rho Gammas and girls waiting to sign, and we told stories, sang songs, and danced. It was a fun night, and we were all so ready to get our letters back.

Quota was set at 14 for each organization.

Friday: Bid day at last! I handed out bids to a freshman hall. One girl I heard down the hall, she was scared to open hers and her roommate tried to open it and then I heard her scream, and jumping, and it was so sweet. The excitement filled the air as we went room to room. Bids were handed out between 4 and 4:30, and from 4:30 to 5 the girls signed and waited to run to their sisters. At 5:15, we gave the new members to their sisters. They were bouncing off the walls in line waiting to run to their organizations.
Chi Omega took 13.
Zeta Tau Alpha took 14.
Sigma Kappa took 14.
Alpha Xi Delta took 2. (COB'd a 3rd later that night)

Running into my sisters arms at Rho Gam reveal during dinner was the best night. I will never forget them nearly tackling me to the ground. We stood behind the cafeteria doors as our organization chanted for us one at a time, and we ran out when our chant was done. One of the coolest moments was seeing my rush crush wearing our bid day shirt!! I cannot wait to see what this semester has to bring and I am very glad to have my letters back.

Very fun read!

Thank you for sharing your experiences about recruitment as a Rho Gamma -- what a different perspective. So glad that you were able to be there for your rush group!

Thanks for sharing your story.

Am I reading/remembering correctly that you pledged last fall? It seems that I have read of campuses on GC where an individual could pledge one year and be a Rho Gamma the next.

On my campus one had to have completed formal recruitment as a PNM as well as complete one formal recruitment on the sorority side prior to applying to be a Rho Gamma. Obviously you had a very positive experience in your position. Do you think that not having experienced how recruitment works had any impact on you?

Yes, Thiel! I love it up here. The Zetas are all sweet girls. My roommate is actually a Zeta.

Yes, I pledged last fall. On my campus, anyone can apply, though if you went through Spring informal you usually won't get it.

I wanted to go through on the chapter side originally but our recruitment chair mailed applications to girls she thought best fit for the job. I ended up getting two - one before the deadline, and one two weeks after the 'deadline' so I kind of realized A.) She really wanted me to do it and B.) We didn't have enough girls apply. I was on social probation in the spring semester so I didn't attend formals or mixers, and I wasn't allowed to participate in greek week or take a little, so I would have been kind of useless at recruitment, in a way. There were actually four rho gammas that had pledged in the fall last year. It was a different perspective but as far as not having experienced it from an active side, I don't think it had that much of an impact on me. We do spring informal, so I knew that each chapter voted on PNM's, what time lists were due, and when bids were handed out. And I knew what kinds of questions actives would ask, so i helped prepare my girls to answer those, and helped them come up with questions to ask the actives. I loved being a Rho Gamma, and I would even consider doing it again if needed.
