Post The Bonds of Sisterhood/Brotherhood

Greetings Sorors(Greeks),...I was viewing another website and arrived at this topic....

As the year closes (and with everything that has gone on this year)...I'm wondering...How many of us ACTUALLY keep up with our line sisters/brothers (ships...in some part of the country )? Tell the truth!!! With my 10th AKAversary being this year, I had the honor/pleasure of contacting all my sands for a reunion. So I can say, I actually spoke to everyone except 1 person off of my line this year.

Now this question is for all sorors/Greeks! Sorors/Greeks who have been out of school for a while (especially); Sorors/Greeks who pledged graduate chapters, but moved to another chapter (or who simply have been in a chapter for a while and some of your LS's have moved on); Sorors/Greeks who are in undergrad still and have several line sisters who have graduated and moved on; Sorors/Greeks who pledged at one school and for one reason or another transferred schools....

I'll start it off.... There was 33 of us on my line in that 'oh so great year of 1991'. I know where 31 of my line sisters live and what they are doing. Only 1 soror is missing....she transfered right after we pledged (actually 3 weeks later).

I know its hard to keep up with line sisters/brothers because of everything going on in your life as well as everything going on in their lives; however, I think its very important to keep in touch with the people who were 'there' for you through thick and thin.

Skee--wee my sorors! And happy holidays to All!

You know we recently had our reunion, even though everyone was not in attendence. I do know where MOST of my LSs are. Of the 55, I/we couldn't locate like 10.

The way it has been since we all went our separate ways, we have kept in touch with each other via our Big Sisters or the group we brought in in '93. We all have a connection . We were a "strange bunch" anyway.

One of our LSs transferred back to her hometown after we went over. When we went over, it was the END of the semester. Anyway, when we returned in January, she didn't come back. However, she returned for every MAJOR event and even participated in our reunion.

Since my LS and I were the first undergraduate line at our school/in our area, our big sisters were mainly the graduate chapter sorors who worked to bring us in, and I have kept up with many of them, including our former grad advisor. I had been keeping up with our DP until I moved to Chicago, and I recently heard she's ill and living an ATL area care facility.

Of the sorors we made, I am etremely close to the first line we took over (know where all four are, what they're doing, been to weddings, graduations, etc.). All but one was either in or at my wedding and I've seen all four in the last 12-18 months. Of later lines, I've kept in touch with two other sorors, and the other four sorors made by our interest group, well, let's just say they weren't studying keeping in touch!

Thumbs up This is a good topic!

Let's see, I crossed grad in the Fall of 1999 and there are 17 of us all together. I know where all of us are and what almost all of us are doing. There was one who was kind of the black sheep of the group to begin with, and she is the only one that almost no one keeps in touch with. She moved across the country shortly after we crossed. I do contact her from time to time, to keep her in the loop, and to find out what's going on in her world. 6 of us have relocated, myself included. ZAQ hasn't taken a line since we went over in '99.

As far as how often we see each other, those that are still in Toledo see each other at least every month for chapter, and go to the mall after the meeting (something we started back then ). As far as those of us who have relocated, besides my LS in Indianapolis, I haven't seen them. Those of us still in the GGL region see each other for events: going away parties, step shows, sister circles, Regional Conferences, stuff like that. Thank GOD for the internet, because that is how most of us keep in contact. Gotta love AOL IM!!

Our 19th anniversary was last November. We're all over the country and got together (planned events!) for our 5th, 10th, 15th during homecoming and are starting to plan our 20th anniversary. When we were preparing for our 15th anniversary, we sent out a newsletter that gave updates on what everyone was doing.

We know where everyone is except one ls who got married right after she graduated.

Sorors, these are cool posts. Thanks for sharing these stories and ideas. They inspire a soror who's been an AKA for just over a year.

Wink When I grow up...I want to be just like Jody (soror Jody)

Jody, I almost cried ..........20 years and that wonderful bond! I want to be just like yall after my 15th, 20th, 25th...... It's hard with 33, but if God is willing, I will always try to keep us together.

Most of my line sisters refer to me as 'da rock' or 'glue' (isn't that sweet)

Where are the rest of MY SORORS! We want to hear from you too!!!!

BTW, I keep up with some of the sorors that made us as well -- my spec from '89 and several from the other lines.

That's great that many of us have kept in touch. However, I do know of cases where older sorors haven't seen their LSs in years. One Soror in particular who PLEDGED (as she says, "I have the scars" lol) in '76 doesn't know where her other 7 LSs are. I was thinking that I would surprise her and try to locate as many as I could for her. I was thinking of doing a "shout out" on the net .

I think in this case, after college there is career and family. With that, some things take a back seat. It' s not like not knowing where your LSs are happens on purpose. I think that situations have made it where time has passed and things happen. But, I know that they all still have that bond, memories, and love for one another as they did many years ago "on campus".

I'm sure that when I become "bogged down" with cooking, cleaning, taking "Susie" here and taking "Jr." there, making sure that Sr's shirts are cleaned etc. etc. that I too, may forget that the last time I saw LS "B" was in umpteen 08. LOL

Lightbulb Soooo True....

So true...as you get older, it gets harder! Some things will have to just take a back-seat (sort to speak) I know that now! Each year, I contemplate going Boule' or not. I'm like, do I have the time? I have a billion and one things to do!..... And yes, you still have those wonderful memories . I just think is so wonderful when I meet sorors from like the 50's or 40's and they tell me of their line sister who lives down the street from them or who sit with them at every sorority meeting.

And you are right...I remember a soror who was on the first line at my undergrad in 1939(I know that was a long time ago)......we asked her questions for our history file. She was like, I don't remember anyone! (now this soror was like a Soror Marjorie Parker, but of New Orleans)We were like OK. I also have friends who pledged in the early/mid 80's that have no idea where their Ls's are......They say its hard with everything going on in their lives...And I can feel them on that!

I work with one of my LS The rest I haven't seen in years, with the exception of the 2 that I saw at homecoming. I truly miss one of my sorors that went to school with me that was very dear to me in Alpha Kappa Alpha. Perhaps I'll figure out how to find her, but until then, I sure do miss my NY "Basian" soror.

Soror Happydaysf91, your post was sooooooooooooo nice! Can I tell you that we had sweatshirts/t-shirts on our 10th and 15th anniversarys that said 10 for the 20 and 15 for the 20 and it had all our names on them?!

I was at Boule in Detroit when Soror Janet Ballard was installed as the 22nd Supreme Basilieus, she had her line sisters with her, I think it was five or six of them, they each were holding ivy plants in their hands, standing shoulder to shoulder, they took a bow together and said, we thank you, I had crocidile tears running down my cheeks! It was beautiful, I was sooooooooo glad I pledged AKA!
