I already have an account on GC, but I thought I'd made an anonymous one so I don't spoil the ending!
Last fall, I went through formal recruitment, even though I told myself I’d never be a “sorority girl”. But my friend convinced me to go through formal, so I decided “eh, why not?!” and signed up.
I knew NOTHING about Greek life, and I didn’t even know the names of the sororities on campus, except for the one my friend (who convinced me to rush) is in. Needless to say, I was clueless and because of that, I went in with a (mostly) open mind.
On my campus, there are 13 sororities:
Alpha Chi Omega
Alpha Omicron Pi
Alpha Phi
Alpha Xi Delta
Gamma Phi Beta
Delta Gamma
Delta Zeta
Kappa Delta
Kappa Kappa Gamma
Pi Beta Phi
Phi Mu
Sigma Kappa
Chi Omega
I will be identifying each sorority in my story by names of characters from “The Simpsons”, which is one of my very favorite shows. The order is mixed up as to keep each sorority anonymous.
Homer
Marge
Bart
Lisa
Maggie
Abraham
Flanders
Krusty
Barney
Apu
Moe
Mr. Burns
Willie
Round 1: Union Round
Round one was split into two days: Wednesday and Thursday. The whole shebang started at 7:30 both days, which I thought was a bit late, but whatever. We were supposed to wear the T-shirts that we got for recruitment, jeans, and comfortable shoes.
Because of the time of day and how many sororities are on campus, the first round was held in the upstairs rooms of the student union. I was told that there were about 450 other girls rushing, which scared me a bit. But I knew if I went to everything I was invited back to, I would be offered a bid to at least one sorority. That was the promise they made to everyone rushing.
And so, round one of rush began!
Apu: I went in not knowing what to expect, which made me very nervous, but I soon calmed down when I figured out how this round went. I was paired with a very nice girl, who was very helpful and knew a lot about the sorority and was very passionate about it. We didn’t have much in common, but she was very good at keeping the conversation going so it wasn’t awkward at all, which is good because I never got bumped the whole time. I thought their philanthropy was interesting, and I kind of liked their colors. All in all, I enjoyed my time talking to her and learning about their sorority, but I was a little indifferent about it.
Barney: For this, I was paired with a girl that lived very close to my hometown. She was very easy to talk to and we had some awesome conversations. Another girl joined us a bit later, but was not as easy to talk to but still kept the conversation going pretty well. I liked their philanthropy a lot and I loved their colors, and I felt very comfortable around them. I was very pleased with my experience and I knew they were one of my favorites!
Willie: The girl I was paired with was pretty bland, but we did have the fact that we both figure skate in common. I soon was bumped by another girl, who I found out later was the president of their sorority. She was very nice and helpful, and very involved in a lot of things on campus. Their philanthropy was interesting, and the girls seemed very easy to get along with. I enjoyed talking to them quite a bit, and I knew I’d be happy if I was invited back.
Marge: I was paired with two girls who were SO nice and extremely passionate about their sisterhood. They didn’t just talk to me about the facts of their sorority like the others did, they also told me about their sisterhood and the fun things they do. I really liked that because it gave me an idea of how close they were. One girl said they they’re like one big family, and that is something that really stuck out to me. I told them how the one thing I was really looking for was a family environment, and she agreed that that was very important, especially to their sisterhood. I did learn a lot about their values and philanthropy also. I LOVED their philanthropy SO much. It really was near and dear to my heart and that is also something very important to me. I knew when I left that
Marge was probably my favorite so far.
Krusty: I was paired with two girls, who were very nice. Problem was, I learned very little about their sorority. We hardly talked about the sorority at all. Although I did learn about their philanthropy, and I loved it and everything it stands for. In the end, I was happy with the round and I liked the girls a lot, but I really wanted to know more.
Homer: I was paired with two girls who were really kind! We all bonded over the fact that we love the Simpsons and Family Guy, and they were also very helpful with answering questions and knew a lot about their philanthropy. I liked their philanthropy, and I liked the girls.
Homer was not my favorite sorority I’d been to during round one, but I did like them quite a bit!
Abraham: This is the sorority my friend belongs to. I was not paired with her, though, which disappointed me. But I did like the girl I was paired with! We both loved music, and I found out she was a music student like I was! We talked a lot about musical theater and the shows we were in as high schoolers. Soon my friend came over and we talked with the other girl about musicals as well. I did not learn a lot about their sorority or philanthropy, but I knew what their philanthropy was already because of my friend. I really like the girl I talked to, and obviously the fact that my friend is in that sorority is a plus. I really wanted to know more about their sisterhood, so I kept them in mind.
Lisa: When I met these girls, I didn’t know what to think. They were nice, but kind of bland and we had nothing in common. I liked their philanthropy, and their colors were nice, but in the end,
Lisa was pretty forgettable to me.
Mr. Burns: The girl I was paired with was awesome!! We both LOVE musical theatre and she was SO easy to talk to. I learned so much about their philanthropy and sisterhood, and I was having a blast during our visit. She introduced me to her big, and mentioned that she was taking a little that semester. I got excited, because I really liked the sorority and a part of me thought how awesome it would be if I was to continue to love the sorority, join it, and she would be my big. But I knew to keep an open mind, but I knew
Mr. Burns was one of my favorites!
Maggie: I was paired with an extremely overly made-up girl (I’m talking multi-colored eyeshadow and very noticeably fake-tanned skin) with an extremely oversized “Snooki-poof” on her head. I am not one to make fun of someone’s looks, but this was ridiculous. It’s as if she was trying to look like a clown, and I found it very hard not to cringe every time I looked at her too-dark-for-the-rest-of-her-face cheeks and eyes. She seemed like a very nice girl, though, so I made sure to focus on the conversation and not her make-up. Unfortunately, she didn’t have the best personality, either. She was very fake-nice and not genuine at all. She told me very weird stories about her time as a lifeguard at her city pool and the gross things she had to clean out of the pool. Thankfully, I was bumped to another girl who had a better personality. I then learned more about their sisterhood and philanthropy, which I enjoyed hearing about a lot. Still, by the end of that, I didn’t feel I would fit in well with
Maggie.
Flanders: I had very mixed feelings about this one. The girl I talked to was nice, but she seemed a bit distracted the whole time. I was never bumped, either. But when she was focusing, our conversation was great! We talked about Harry Potter and Glee, and she told me about their philanthropy, which I loved, and their sisterhood. They seemed to be a pretty close sisterhood, which I liked a lot. In the end, though, I wasn’t sure how I ranked them, but
Flanders was definitely NOT my least favorite.
Bart: I also had mixed feelings about this one, just like with Flanders. I was paired with two girls, and we had a great conversation about family and why we became interested in Greek life. I enjoyed my conversations with them, and I enjoyed learning about their philanthropy a lot. But again, I wasn’t sure where I’d place
Bart in the rankings.
Moe: The girl I was paired up with was hilarious and so nice!! I learned a lot about their sisterhood and their philanthropy, which I absolutely loved! I wasn’t sure how great their sisterhood was, though. I noticed there were a lot of cliques going on, but I hoped it was a misconception on my part, because I really liked
Moe!
So ends round one. For preffing who we liked and didn’t like, we were suppose to write down the ten we liked the most in no particular order, and the three we liked the least in order from the one we disliked the least to the one we absolutely DID NOT like at all.
But I did have a ranking of my top ten in my mind, so I’ll share it with you anyway.
