Name Tags

Hey girls
I need some advice.
So I am formal rush chair for spring semester(Feb1-4th)
I have sooo much to do over break.
Anyhow, instead of the usual stick on or paper name tags, I thought of a really nice idea. So, I went to the greek store and had them make a sample(which is not done yet) Since we will be wearing rush t-shirts each day, I thought of name tags out of standard letter material, a Delta, with letters inside it, and the sisters name hand stitched inside.
Before I go through with this, they are going to cost TWELVE dollars each!
After last night being up till 4 am thinking about rush, I thought to myself, I could buy thin material and paste them to poster board in the hsape of a delta, and put the sister's name in glitter! Not as beautiful, but still a far cry from the stick ons, and I would save us a couple hundred bucks!
What do you girls think, what should I do????????
Help bc I cannot decide.

I think you should just make them yourself. It might take more of your time, but it will save you lots of money. Plus something "homemade" is always better than store bought. Maybe you could have a sisterhood and every person could make their own. Have several patterns made up, and each girl could personalize theirs. It would be a fun time! Good luck!

OK, if you have a scrapbooking store in town you would surely be able to find a cut-out (shape) in either your symbol or letters. A lot of times they are made of really cool materials and look fabuous. If you don't have a scrapbooking store try your local craft store, or even Walmart has some supplies like this.

Also, go to your local fabric/sewing store and ask one of the women there. They always help me come up with ideas, and they love to help the "young girls" get interested in sewing/crafts! Last year I made a beautiful satin banner and they were more than helpful. A lot of times they have an in-store seamstress, or one of the women who works there takes on outside projects. A lot of them do professional embroidery.

Here's my (relatively) cheap thought.

Make up the nametags on the computer and print them (in color) on cardstock. Take them to Kinko's (or similar) and get the tags laminated. Then go to a craft store and buy pin backs and glue them on the tags.

Benefits:

Classier than paper stick-on
Much cheaper than the fabric kind.
You can make a different tag for each night, to go with the theme.
You can add information to the tag that can help with conversation. For example, offices held, activities on campus.

If you want, I could mock up a sample and post it on the board.

Or if you don't want to pay to laminate tags, get those kind where you just stick the card into the plastic holder that has a pin on the back?

We had to pay $15 each for our rush nametags. They were a goldish metal with the Gamma Phi Beta crest and our name kind of engraved on them in black. I think it takes a while to get them back, though. I think we ordered them at the end of the school year and they came in sometime in the summer before rush started in August.
We wore them for all rush events (and some other events where alums were there) and we kept the same nametag the entire time we were in the sorority. That way, only the new members had to pay for a name tag each year. This is still they way they do it and I still have my old nametag!
Maybe something to think about for fall rush... Check around for a badge company. And I don't think it's too much to ask for each member to pay for her own nametag...don't take it out of your rush budget.

GammaPhiBabe has a really good idea! My chapter does about the same thing. We have a very simple black nametag with our name engraved on it and our chapter name underneath. We wear it during pref ceremonies and during things like Founders' Day where alumnae will be present. Not only does it look very nice with our dresses during pref, but it is relatively inexpensive because you can use it over and over. It also helps your rush committees save time because that's one less arts and crafts chore they have to do each year for pref. Homemade nametags can take a LONG time to do, especially when you have big chapters!

We have a different nametag each day and it is in a different shape or style and is printed on cardstock and laminated. Our pref nametags are fancier though and they are rectangular and have a small bow tied at the top. Very cool.

hey
These are all really great ideas, and thank you!
We do have a greek store that can get them done by rush here, luckily.
That is a good idea, to get the girls to pay for their own, and each year have new members pay. I will have to send something out to our listserve and see what they think, bc I don't want to spend it out of the rush budget!
If they refuse to pay, I may end up making them, we have a nice craft store around here, and I also like the laminating idea!
Thanks a lot girls!

We also do the gold with black engraved names. We get them from a trophy and plaque place. The house pays for them when we are freshman. If we lose it we have to buy a new one. Ours aren't that expensive because we don't put our crest on them. We wear them every day of rush except bid day. We also wear our badge every day but the first day and bid day. We put the nametag on either on the opposite side or under our badge-I can't remember. I think the nametags only cost about $5. If we ordered them at the beginning of work week we had them in time for rush.

We had the cutest nametags fro rush this past year. They were made out of shrinky dinks, you know those plastic things you color and stick in the oven, and they come out hard? We had those in the shape of a teddy bear, and 2 of our sisters colored them, wrote everyone's name on the belly of the bear, and glued a green bow on the front around the bears neck, and glued pins on the back. They were so cute, and we wore them every day except for prefs, because the PNM's don't wear nametags then either. We do wear them on bid day though, and it kind of helps the new girls out!

I just want to say how much I LOVE the "wear the engraved nametag for every rush" idea. Very classy and while expensive at the beginning, it would be a lot less of a pain in the butt than cutting out all those palm trees, harlequin masks, etc etc etc...

Our chapter buys all the members name tags for rush. The chapter picks up the expense (or use to), unless you lose yours, the second one is a $12 expense for the member. They are blue arrows (strong plastic) with our first name on it. Most of the chapters at USM do the same thing. DG has navy blue anchors with the member's first name. Chi O has a red owl with the member's name in yellow... ETC..

oh my gosh. these name tag ideas sound so gosh darn cute. i wanna rush right now. JK. kinda makes our this year a little too homemadish we made little microphones out of that "not really foam but some other kinda crafty material" and attached a little swirl line with our names on it. they were cute but nowhere near what some of ya'll are talking 'bout.

Okay...there are these square AXO buttons...they have AXO in green in the center...I've seen women from National wear them, along with others for nametags. We had our names printed on clear labels, and just affixed the labels on the buttons! They definitely look much more professional than they sound, and you can wear them over and over again.
