Greatly Insulted
Sisters Everywhere,
I was just perusing posts in the General Forum under Greek Topics. I came across a rather popular post named "elite sororities." I read it, being proud of the fact that we're the 2nd oldest in the USA. It made me want to KICK IN the screen. Someone basically said that WE DO NOT COUNT. It became a great big bickering match and I posted that they all need to ACT elite, calm down, and go read my post in the same forum called Greek Unity.
But, it hurts. I am proud of our heritage. I am PROUD to be a Phi Mu. And darn it, I think we're the best out there. It's times like these that the petty thinking that people outside the greek life think about us is true. For Pete's sake, are numbers really everything? And for Pete's sake, we should still be elite by that count.
I'm SO mad.

I totally agree with you
I too was very disappointed at the comments that some people put there. Those petty arguments are so not worth anyone's time, but they still hurt. I was even more upset to see that someone from my campus (UF) had this whole list with different ranks for the sororities here. Needless to say this person said that Phi Mu was "not elite at all". Now, I know that people are allowed to say whatever they want and everything, but that can really affect PNM's ideas about certain groups before rush even starts. They already going in saying "Oh, I definetly don't want to be an ABC, they are not popular"
I met a girl on the bus recentley who had been in my rush group, but dropped out after round one. she got invited back to 6 housed, 2 more than I did, but since they were not considered the top dogs she dropped out. The only reason was based on reputaion, not actual fact because she told me that she didn't know anyone in a single sorority.
Anyway, I just get so tired of hearing all over the UF campus that we're not elite, and that silly little Phi Moo. honestly, can't people be a little more creative? The point is, its not supposed to be about what catagory of supposed "elite-ness" you're in. Its supposed to be about a true bond. And based on that I know that there is no other place that I would rather be than Phi Mu. So bring on the silly stereotypes, because I can promise you that we can break them all!!
(sorry for the rant, I was really angry )

UFgirl,
I think "Phi Moo" is probably playfully used anywhere that GLOs have nicknames. I've heard some rather interesting variations of other organizations' names on my campus, and ours is somewhat mild in comparison.
I was browsing some earlier threads, and came across one in particular (about nicknames) that said the Phi Mus on a certain campus were called "Phi Moo" not because of size... just because "nothing gets under a girl's skin like a 'MOOOO'"
As far as elite goes, I think it is a matter of opinion. It really does vary from place to place. I am always proud to wear my letters because I know that I am being looked up to.
Just my $0.02 worth

my late .02
I'm a little late reading this, but I just want to say that reputations as far as "elite" go matter most to you when you're like a freshmen or sophomore, but once you get to be an older sister you realize that it's what you think of Phi Mu that really matters.
I personally wouldn't want to be a part of any other chapter, though there are some great ones on my campus. As I got older, I'm a senior now, I realized that Phi Mus at UF are classy, fun girls and yeah, we may not be the trashy ones that attract all the "fabulous" frat guys, but like one Sigma Chi said, we are the ones that they want to marry--which is a whole lot more respectable than the ones they simply want to take home from the bar.
So everyone hold your head high because you ARE a PHI MU and we are the best around. Really we are!
ok, just my .02!

I am just catching this late also, but as an older sister I have to agree. It gets me fired up to read those comments too, but you have to know what is in your heart, and that is what will reflect out during recruitment. We are 150 years strong. Don't let a 15min conversation ruin that for you!!! Keep your heads held high, you are part of the best damn bond that a sorority ever could have created!!! LIOB
