A California special education teacher was arrested Thursday on suspicion of having sex with one of her former students.
Kelly McKenzy Watson faces charges of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor after she allegedly engaged in a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old boy, NBC 7 reported.
Watson met the student when she was teaching at New Haven Youth and Family Services in Vista, Calif., a school dedicated to helping young boys with emotional and behavioral issues.
The 34-year-old was a special education teacher at the residential school from September 2010 to August 2011, before transferring to Oceanside High School in Oceanside, Calif.
Authorities believe that the relationship began after Watson left New Haven Youth.
"They met when he was a student of hers, and they later forged a relationship which was inappropriate and illegal," San Diego police Lt. Anastasia Smith of the department's Sex Crime Unit told NCTimes.com.
Watson is currently employed by Oceanside, though she has been placed on paid administrative leave since the arrest.

Sex Crimes detectives began looking into the relationship after they received a tip about possible inappropriate sexual conduct on July 30, according to NBC 7. They believe that Watson and her former student dated several months earlier.
Doreen Quinn, CEO of New Haven Youth and Family Services, said the school is "dismayed and saddened" by the allegations.
Watson was held at Las Colinas Women's Detention Facility in Santee, Calif., until she posted $45,000 bail Friday, NCTimes.com reported. She is set to appear in court on Aug. 20.
