Talking New Sorority on Campus

I'm a member of a local sorority at SHSU, and in about 2 weeks 3 national sororities are coming on campus to check out SHSU and us. Our membership is fairly low because we are not national, but we really want to make a great impression, because we feel becoming national is the next step for us. Sigma Sigma Sigma and Alpha Xi Delta are the two I know who are coming for sure...anyone come from a local sorority that later became national and have some tips? In one of these orgs and have advice or tips as well?

Well, I am a Sigma Sigma Sigma sister that was a member of a local that petitioned several NPC sororities and we clicked with Sigma right away. They helped us with that TOUGH transition from local to National, and understood that we also wanted to keep some local traditions. They were always willing to work with us. We also have a program that puts a three year support plan into place. After colonizing, you have three years of unlimited support from EO so that if you have any questions or doubts, they are there for you. Not to say that after those three years you are left flapping in the wind, ut after researching, we found that most new chapters fail within three years. We felt that laying the solid groundwork a new chapter needs leaves them stronger than when we got there. I love being a Tri Sigma. Of course, AXiD is a great NPC as well, I just don't know anything about them. I would encourage you to ask all questions that linger in your mind and go with your heart! Feel free to email me at sigma94@yahoo.com to ask any questions you would like answered!

SigL, both are very great NPC's and all you need to do is present your self in a positive light. Are you grades up, are your members in campus commettiees, are you envolved in campus and local events? This is a plus and shows that you are a group who if associated with a National could do more!
I know very well as started a local that went with LXA and have never looked back and am still envolved after 36 yrs.
Look at both or anyothers to see if your group fits! Be knowledgable of both! Check greekpages.com and you can get info on both and the chapters!

GREAT LUCK to you!!!!

Well first off.. congradulations on having the opprutunity to go national!!
Im a Phi Mu from Miami, and i LOVE my GLO... but about the ones coming to visit you... we have both of those organizations at my campus.. my advice to u is to look at their national webpage as well as some of their other national chapters.. at different schools..
look at their values, their beliefs and the things they were founded upon.. read their creeds.. see if those things they believe strongly are things your own local chapter also believes in.. that is what i would do.. but when they come im sure they will share all that with u as well..

GOOD LUCK! and congrats!!! that is a very great accomplishment..

keep us posted!!

hi, well we met with tri sigma, alpha xi delta, and alpha sigma alpha. we took a vote as well as the other sororities, and took that vote to discuss with panhellenic. a vote was taken at panhellenic, but only the president knows what sorority got it. we should know very soon what sorority it will be, but we have to clear up things with housing before we send out the invitation (at least that's my understanding) we really liked alpha xi delta and tri sigma the best, although asa was completely wonderful too! will post more news as i find more out! take care!

So, your group is the one that will be picked up and you don't know what your group voted for? How much say so does Panhellenic have, they can choose the group that you will become?

Is that odd to anyone else?

I could be totally wrong here, but I think that this is the situation. SHSU Panhellenic Council decided to expand and add another NPC chapter. Sigma Lambda Epsilon is a local on that campus who decided to seek NPC affiliation and saw this as an opportune time to make it happen. Since the PC had already decided to expand before the local came forward, "Green Book" procedures state that the PC can choose the sorority. The reason is because the expansion was not specific to finding an NPC for the local. The new NPC and the local, through mutual choice, will decide if they will merge.

What an exciting time for SLE and SHSU!!!!

Hey all! Wow, thanks soooo much for your support and excitement for us! I have to say this is truly an exciting time for SHSU and us. To fill you in on what's going on...we met with three nationals: Sigma Sigma Sigma, Alpha Xi Delta and Alpha Sigma Alpha. All three organizations were absolutely wonderful and were very impressed with us. We gave each national a notebook full of our info (constitution, bylaws, academic and philanthropy info, etc) and bombarded them with questions!! We did feel a strong connection with both Tri Sigma and Alpha Xi Delta. As an organization, we took a vote. Our president attended the Panhellenic meeting and discussed who we wanted, as well as what the three other sororities on campus as well. Then the PC took a vote, however only the president knows who was chosen until a formal announcement is made. Hopefully, this will be made soon. Right now, our panhellenic advisor is trying to secure housing for the new organization (hopefully us!) and once that is taken care of, an invitation will be sent to that sorority. Next, that sorority has to decide on whether or not they will accept that invitation and whether or not they would like to take us over...at least this is our understanding of this.

As for my sorority, to give you guys a little background info, we were founded in March of 1993 with the sole purpose of becoming a national sorority in the future (who knew that it would take 8 years - but that's okay, good things come to those who wait)! If I am correct, I believe some of our past members petitioned the university to bring another sorority on campus for us, but because there was not a need for another sorority, this did not happen. After, unfortunately, Chi Omega's chapter closed here, a severe need was seen. The sorority wasn't invited on here specifically for us, like aopirose said, that option has been given to the new sorority. I'll keep you all updated as soon as i get more info! Thanks again for your support!

Lexi -

I would assume that since the group who is going to be the nucleus of the new sorority has indicated their preference, the college's panhel wouldn't vote otherwise, unless someone has a real problem with that group.

OK, I know this thread is a few months old, but it strikes pretty close to home for me...

I was a member of a local sorority that went national.

As I understand it ~ if a local sorority approaches Panhel and says "we want to become a chapter of a national sorority" the local gets to choose the national. If Panhel decides a new national should colonize (before a local approaches), Panhel picks the national; but if the national Panhel chooses to colonize and a local sorority interested in becoming part of a national sorority are mutually interested, the local becomes the new colony. (Correct me if I'm wrong)

Anyway ~ to siglambshsu ~ congrats on Tri Sigma!

I could be wrong, but if an interest group contacts a panhellenic and wants to go "national", they are to send out an invitation to all NPC sororities that don't already exist on the campus.

One of the locals on our campus threw around going national. This wasn't a decision that Panhel wanted to expand, this was a large local wanting to get a national affiliation. In any case, they had to send out a huge packet of information to all of the NPC sororities that weren't already on the campus (21 are not). In any case, being as it's a state school in PA, many nationals probably just chucked that invite in the trash can. But a few groups came and made presentations to the local chapter and the Panhellenic. In the end, a group was selected, but the local decided they didn't want to do it anymore, and the effort fell through.

The point is, all NPC sororities must be invited to participate in a local going national.

This is not necessarily true. It would depend on the situation and how closely the Panhellenic Council follows the Green Book.

The Green Book says that if a local wants a particular NPC and has permission from the proper authority, the local can approach that particular NPC. The Council would notify the other groups either through NPC HQ or directly that this sort of expansion is happening. The other groups cannot come in and say, "hey, look at us too." Although, IMHO, it is best to see what everyone has to offer.

In the case that you described, it would seem that the local had no preference so all were invited.
