This was about a year ago. One night I left my wallet in the upper part of a shopping cart. It was dark out so I didn't notice it when I put the cart away. (How do I know that's where I left it? I had done the same thing about 6 months earlier. I realized I had left it behind and fortunately my wallet was still there when I drove back.) So this time I hadn't noticed that I left it behind. I get a call from my sister in California (to me in Illinois) and she tells me someone found my wallet...and I'm thinking "someone in California found my wallet?" Duh. No, apparently a woman in my neighborhood found my wallet, looked for a phone number in it, found my sister's number and called her. My sister gave me her number, I called and this woman was so incredibly nice. She drove right up to my building to give me my wallet. I was grateful beyond words!
Years ago I found a man's credit card. I called the 800 number on the back of the card and then cut it up and tossed it.
Other than that, I've never found anything valuable.

My cat!
He's an outdoor cat, and every night, he comes right in when my stepdad whistles for him. One night last year, he didn't come home.
28 days later.. we got a call saying he had been found! A woman who lives about 10 miles from us had found him and kept him at her house for a weekend, thinking he was a stray. He had a flea collar, but he would always find a way to take them off. Seeing he was so well kept and affectionate, she figured he had to belong to someone, so she took him to a vet on that Monday to see if he just happened to have a microchip. Thank goodness she did! She wanted to keep him, and even called to say that she loved him so much, she'd gladly take him if we didn't want him. Of course we couldn't give him up
He now has a real collar!

Hopefully you added a phone number that isn't your cell phone number... haha
I know that sounds dumb, but I had a friend who did that. When she lost her phone, someone called one of her friends to return it. She was confused as to why the person didn't call her.. and then realized they tried calling her on her phone, but of course they couldn't reach her...

^That's um, special.
I belong to an animal rescue organization, and I am continually amazed at the number of people who a) Spend hundreds on a dog, then don't get the poor thing microchipped or b) Find an obviously well-treated, groomed dog and don't think of taking it to the vet to look for a microchip!
I've yet to hear of a vet who charges for looking for a microchip!!

Oh, yes, dogs! We used to find stray dogs all the time. Almost always managed to get them back to their owners.
Right after the last big earthquake in Los Angeles (I think it was 1994) I found a stray shih-tzu. There were so many lost dogs and cats. I put up fliers but didn't hear anything for about two weeks. I don't remember taking her to a vet to see if she was microchipped so I'm wondering how long they've been in regular use. I finally got a call from an elderly woman in a different part of town. It wasn't likely but she was hoping that I had her little dog, Gizmo. Sadly, it was not Gizmo but no one had claimed her so she went home with the woman. It still makes me sad that I wasn't able to find that dog's owner. I'd be absolutely devastated if I lost my dog.

There is a very high-kill shelter south of Chicago, and the group I love, Small Paws Rescue, Inc visits there with great regularity. SIX bichon frises were saved just today! But I digress...
A bichon got hit by a car, and somehow, managed to get back to his house. What went down there, heaven knows, but the dog wasn't taken to the vet or treated at all! The poor thing got out, and got lost, ending up in a shelter (not the one above), and they automatically scanned for a microchip. It had one! But when they called the house, the woman said it was her daughter's dog, and she never did like the dog. At least there's a happy ending - he made it into the Small Paws Witness Protection Plan, has been vetted (two broken ribs, one broken leg), and has been adopted. His age? One and a half!
I just don't understand people...

My high school class ring was stolen while I was away at college. I dont remeber why i was looking for it at Christmas time but it was missing from my jewelry box. My mom swore I was nuts. Six years later - just before I got married my dad found it in the bushes under my bedroom window. One of my little sister's friends confessed to stealing it to wear to school. She brought it back to return it - but then chickened out and threw it in the bush.

I have dual citizenship with another country, thanks to one great-grandfather. I applied in my mid 20s after reading that their citizenship laws were about to be tightened. It required some paperwork for proof--copies of birth and death certificates, census records, etc. My application arrived in time, but it couldn't be processed before the deadline.
It was in limbo for years, but about a year or so after I applied, my aunt called me. A guy with the same name as that part of the family had contacted her. His application had been processed, and when the consulate returned his paperwork, they also sent some of mine. He tracked her down because she was the witness on my grandfather's death certificate, so between the three of us, I got the copies and sent them back to the consulate. The citizenship was finally official about 7.5 years after the application.

I lost my cellphone once when I went up skiiing. The night before I was on the phone with my mom and after we finished talking I put the phone in my ski jacket. The next day we all went up on the mountain to ski and I didn't even realize I had my phone and it had fallen out of my pocket. Since my last call had been to my mom the person who found it called her who in turn called my boyfriend. We met up with them shortly there after to grab my phone. It was really nice of them to get it back to me and surprising someone even found it on the mountain!!
