Are fraternities inherently chauvinistic?
I'm writing a paper that seeks to debunk the misconception(?)that fraternities are intrinsically masochistic. Please help me
out!!! I am starting to feel that my paper is a lost cause. Is it? =>tricia

Mccoyred, thank you; I was wondering that myself! ps I see from your profile that you're in Baltimore. I'm just south in Annapolis; are you loving this weather or what? :-) Spring has finally sprung!

Well, someone is a chauvinist, means they love their cause above all else. Means that they would suffer for their cause. In time maybe enjoy that pain/suffering. That is masochistic. This person is saying that s/he is trying to debunk that, so more power!

Oh brother............
Tricia--I'm just going to assume here that you mean no harm, but honestly--this is not the right place to ask. By the way, chauvanistic is definitely differnt from masochistic...get it straight...
And, just for the record...all the fraternity men, that's right--MEN that I know are neither chauvinistic or masochistic...and if they were, you'd bet that they would have no one to hang out with. Hello!! If they were, most fraternities would be pretty extinct...they pride in BROTHERHOOD and SERVICE, not chauvinism and masochism.
I'm starting to question if this is really a paper or not--b/c it sounds terribly fishy to me. Seriously--couldn't you find a BETTER topic than THIS?????? I'm in Sociology--and there are millions of more constructive topics than the one that you SAY you are trying to prove.

BTW Billy Optimist, I'm almost 100 percent sure that Tricia means meaning number 2. in the definition of chauvinism:
chau·vin·ism (sh½“v…-n¹z”…m) n. 1. Militant devotion to and glorification of one's country; fanatical patriotism. 2. Prejudiced belief in the superiority of one's own gender, group, or kind: “the chauvinism . . . of making extraterrestrial life in our own image” (Henry S.F. Cooper, Jr.). [French chauvinisme, after Nicolas Chauvin, a legendary French soldier famous for his devotion to Napoleon.] --chau“vin·ist n. --chau”vin·is“tic adj. --chau”vin·is“ti·cal·ly adv.
For example, a chauvinist might believe that women are inferior to his own gender. He expects women to wait on him, serve him, etc. For example, I once saw on TV that a man wanted his wife to clip his toenails for him, wash him, and all that other yucky stuff...he treats his wife as property. Basically, chauvinists are selfish, idiotic creeps who forget that they are living in the 21st century. And I have not met ONE fraternity man who is a chauvinist or a masochist.

The best I can desribe it, is we are not Frat Boys, but Fraternity Men. Of course there are some that act like full blown jerks!
