Another Black teen dies at the hands of police

Oscar Carrillo's 911 call was clear: Two young men just robbed him of his computer and backpack. At least one of them had a gun and it was pointed in Carrillo's face.

Moments later, police caught up with two teens they believed were the thieves in a Pasadena alleyway. When one of them, Kendrec McDade, made a move at his waistband, an officer opened fire, killing the 19-year-old college student, authorities said.

No weapons or the stolen items have been found.

Now, police are laying part of the blame for the fatal shooting on Carrillo, who they say admitted that he lied about the men being armed so officers would respond faster. "The actions of the 911 caller set the minds of the officers," police Chief Phillip Sanchez said.

Do you think police are shifting blame to take some of the responsibility off of them or should they still be held liable in the shooting?

What is your opinion of this?

If they think a suspect is armed and dangerous, they shouldn't be expected to take any chances with their own lives.

Moral of the story: Don't rob people and you're much less likely to be shot by the police or someone else. It's a hazard of the job.

But we aren't going to discount the fact that Carillo lied about the alleged robbers had guns right?

I'd say Mr. Carillo might be in some trouble. His call (rightfully) put the suspicion in the officer's minds. Perhaps the prosecutor or a grand jury will have to weigh whether the officers used sufficient discretion.

The OP said no equipment (or weapon) was found, but I thought the story said that the juvenile with the decedent had computer equipment on him?

Nope...a few of the other supporting stories I have read show that neither the stolen items or a gun have been found.

"Police said there was no weapon or laptop found in the area."
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la...,0,50690.story

"The shooting took place in a dark, mixed-use area and there were no witnesses, Riddle said. McDade died at a hospital. A 17-year-old Pasadena boy, said to be with McDade during the incident, was arrested and charged with grand theft. The laptop and the backpack have not been found."

Was the other suspect apprehended? If not -- Since McDade is dead, that means the account of the events came from Carillo. It's gong to be tough believing him, given his other significant lie.

From the media:

Carrillo has been arrested for investigation of involuntary manslaughter. Prosecutors are weighing whether to file charges. The juvenile with McDade was charged with two counts of commercial burglary, one count of grand theft and one count of failure to register as a gang member as a condition of his probation.

Police officers put their lives on the line every time they exit their patrol cars. For a suspect (traffic stop or being pursued for robbery) to make a gesture towards their waistband sets in motion a defense responsive from the officer. Ten officers have already been killed in the US in 2012 by gunfire.

Is the other suspect being charged with felony murder? If not, why not?

I can buy an involuntary manslaughter charge for Carrillo. I think there's probably enough there for a jury to get involved at some point. Yes, lying about there being a weapon involved is probably the only way to get the police to actually respond to a robbery call in a timely manner where the suspect might be apprehended, but as you can imagine, if everyone did that, it'd put a hell of a strain on law enforcement.

Also, it's not unforeseeable that the police might be more prone to deadly force when misinformed about the existence of a weapon.

I disagree with this. The dispatcher and the office both did the right thing I think.

I would not be surprised if they do charge him.

Did I miss something? The dispatcher lied? I thought that person was just relaying the information Carillo provided?

Right. It was Carillo who lied to the dispatcher. The dispatcher merely passed along what he or she was told.

My mistake. I was reading another forum on this subject & they had Carillo as the 911 dispatcher.

Sorry...Sorry
