Except it's the other way around. She wants to tell her big where to buy a shirt to give
her rather than letting her big make (a "tacky") one for her as is chapter custom.

maykel, the best help I can give you is to clue you in that however tacky you think the shirts are, they would be rivaled in tackiness by what you are proposing. Nothing says "I'm too good for the rest of you" better than letting your big know up front that you don't like the chapter tradition, that you don't want her to make a shirt for you and that you would rather tell her where she can buy you one more to your liking.
My advice is accept the gift graciously and wear it at least a few times to show that you appreciate the thought that went into it. Then buy yourself some letters you like better. Later on, when you're on the other side of the Big-Little equation, perhaps you can suggest that people rethink the tee-shirts with puffy paint.
