Ferrets instead?

Sort of sad early morning though...

I saw a mention online for an insulting nickname for a sorority that included "pigs" based on a *phi* in their name and my first thought was why should they use "pigs", that not a pi...

You really expect the intellectual giants who would come up with a nickname like that to understand the difference between Φ and Π or to wrap their minds around the idea that just because Φ becomes two letters (PH) in English, it doesn't work that way in Greek?

(I've even seen some Greeks do things like try to spell Alpha in Greek letters, only they spell it ΑΛΠΗΑ instead of ΑΛΦΑ.)

For a moment there, I thought you were talking about that Sorority Girls show . . .

I'd agree with you, were it not for the fact that a National Social GLO misspells the greek spelling for Theta in their crest.

OK. There is a GLO whose letters include a phi, lets say Beta Beta Phi (it isn't but I'm not going to mention the letters) and one of their derogatory nicknames is Big Big Pigs. My comment was that my first thought was that their nickname shouldn't be Big Big Pigs since Pigs is a P sound not a Ph/F sound. So I was thinking they should be Big Big *Ferrets* rather than Big Big Pigs.

Ferrets aren't derogatory enough, and dammit they just have to be insulting!

Had to go double-check! Confession: For a long time I thought "Theta" was misspelled in our COA.

I never mastered the phonetics of the written Greek Alphabet. Interestingly, I can transcribe many sounds using the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) and used to be fairly accomplished at diacritical markings (fine rather than broad transcription). However, those dendrites were pruned a long time ago, due to disuse, and it's doubtful that I'll grow new ones in that area.

The misspelling

The letter Theta in greek is spelled Theta-Eta-Tau-Alpha, this particular group spells it Theta-Epsilon-Tau-Alpha.

Maybe fixing their coat of arms should be something on the To-do list for their Centennial.
