Rush at Cornell???

Cornell University women rush in January after winter break. What's rush like at Cornell?

What are the reputations of the sororities around campus?

Any help?

Thanks!
Shari

Hello!

Rush at Cornell is very fun and very cold!
First round is very quick - 13 sororities so you get to see each house. You will go around in your Rho Chi group.

Then you go back to 10 houses for house tour/philanthropy day. You get a tour of each of the ten houses you go to. For the philanthropy some do events -a craft etc others just have posters up telling you about their philanthropy.

Next is skit round and you can go back to 6 houses. Funny is very popular for skits at Cornell.

Finally you get to go to three houses for pref.

Remember it is cold and after 1st round you could be having to go between campuses between parties -because not all houses (but most) are on North campus. There is a bus but it is still cold and if it snows that's just the worst! Dress warm -a lot of girls where one pair of shoes and change when they get to the chapters (but don't do that during open house-do it for later rounds like pref). All the houses have some sort of way to store coats so where one with a scarf and gloves etc. One really good idea is to buy those little bags of instant hand warmers (like they sell in ski shops)

No classes are happening but lots of parties during rush are but if you go out all night you are going to fall asleep at rush parties!

Good uck and let us know how it goes!

Exclamation Old SEVENTEEN magazine...

If you can dig up a copy of SEVENTEEN magazine (I think it's like September 1989 or 1990), it was called "What Sorority Rush is REALLY LIKE" and yes, ma'am, it was at Cornell!

I'd photocopy it and send it to you, but I am in Australia at the moment...sorry!

I do not have any personal experience with Rush at Cornell but my boy graduated from there so I know a little. The Greek system is popular there, hence 13 different sororities. It is also a bit competative for a school in the North I think, each house has their own 'thing' or reputation, one that ma boy still comments on now and then. There's a book called The Smart Girls Guide To College by Cristina Page that is all personal account essays/stories. One girl from Cornell wrote about the Greek system @ Cornell. She didn't accept her bid but it does tell a good story about her individiual experience with the process. Even tho every one's experiences is different, it might be nice to look for the book. Aphigal is right on about the cold weather! I *think* Theta may be the only house on West??? and the others are up North?
Good Luck and Have FUN Shari!!!

My cousin went through Cornell's Recruitment last year and accepted a bid to Alpha Chi Omega. She loves it and it was really special for me because she and I are the only two 'greeks' in the family.

Not the same thing, but my dad is a Kappa Sig from Cornell and he LOVED it. He had a ball there and still keeps in contact with a lot of his brothers. I think the Greek system at Cornell is really great--and a little plug because I hear AOTT is really good here too!!

I met some of the Cornell KDs at Excellence Expedition, a regional gathering conference deal, and they were really sweet girls who seemed to have it all together in their chapter.

I will add my 2 cents about Alpha Phi - they have a great sisterhood, fabulous events (both sisterhood and mixers) a beautiful chapter house and always win campus and Alpha Phi International awards!

But really most groups at Cornell are strong. Almost everyone takes quota.

While Delta Phi Epsilon isn't the biggest chapter on campus, they are very cool, and if you visit their website, you can read a great diary of a rushee, to get some information

Best of luck with recruitment and I can't wait to hear your chilly stories

Good luck with Rush. I visited Cornell many times for mixers with fraternities. I had fun! I hope that you have fun, too!
