USC (South Carolina): Two Fraternity Houses Empty

An article about the situation -- the problems -- two fraternities, housing corps, etc. face with closed / empty houses. Pics accompanying the article show what look like pretty damn decent new houses; see

Does Alpha Gamma Delta have a house on campus? I would think this is excellent news for the sorority system on campus as they look like they could use another expansion as soon as AGD gets settled in.

SigEp will be back for sure. I hope Lambda Chi isn't but who knows. SigEp is the newest house in the village. Not sure how long Lambda Chi has had that house there.

From people that I've heard from, that go to SC, you're not alone on that.

Yeah, but who knows. Lambda Chi got gutted, so they might be turning a new leaf. It's going to be hard with I think AEPi and DTD having both the finances and the numbers to maybe buy that house from Lambda Chi nationals. Or at least rent it out for a few years.

How many of the Fraternities at SC have a house (excluding LXA, obviously)?

KA, EN, Chi Psi, SAE, ATO, KE , PiKapp, and Sigma Chi. So 8 in the village. Some fraternities have shabby apartment style housing, but I don't count those since they aren't relevant. I think its like PhiSig and some other small fraternities. From what I know, Pike lost their lease (Phi Mu currently resides at the old Pike house, I think) and LXA and SigEp are out right now.

Alpha Gamma Delta has not previously been on the South Carolina campus.

I'm sure the remaining fraternities will be relieved to know that you don't consider them relevant.

You really are an ass, aren't you? Before you go all claiming that you're not politically correct, having common courtesy is not the same as being politically correct.

Common courtesy? Are you serious? If the fraternities do not have the numbers, finances, or the interest to have as much of an impact on the Greek Life of USC, does that not make them irrelevant? You show me DTD, PhiSig, PhiKapp, DU, TDX, Beta, and whoever else can compete with the fraternities that currently reside in the Greek Village, and I will withdraw my relevance remark. Of all those, DTD is the closest to being relevant, in fact, I would venture to say they are already there. But then again, DTD doesn't live in that apartment style housing that I was talking about. They have a quad of houses off of the village.

As for common courtesy, the other posters on this site seem to be abounding with common courtesy. (Sarcasm, just in case you didn't know). So please, get off your high horse.

To answer your questions:

1. Yes, I am completely serious about common courtesy. Your lack of respect for darn near EVERYONE is immature and ridiculous.

2. No, it doesn't make them irrelevant. It makes them smaller organizations; some people actually prefer to be in a smaller group. What you need to realize is that all it takes is for one group of guys to change the reputation of an organization, and they'll be "relevant." I've seen it happen. Even at an SEC school. You may be surprised to see what develops now that two groups are gone.

3. We're only not courteous to those who deserve it. You keep posting ugly things, so you win! Congratulations!

As AGDLynn said, AGD is not currently on campus but will be coming here in the fall. They are one of the organizations that want to take (lease) one of the houses but it is not official who will live in it as of now. And yes, Phi Mu is in a 5 year lease with the Pike house. From what I've heard from fraternity guys that I have classes with, Beta and DTD are the two that are really trying to get a house (as are a lot of the other smaller fraternities, but I think they may have the better shot of it based on numbers and support). I've also heard from a DTD that some of the members like their off-campus houses and would rather have that. Again, just a reflection of a few guys and by no means the thoughts of the entire chapter.

Onto what amIblue? was saying, bigger isn't always better. I feel bigger organizations get rather clique like in nature and cannot connect as well as a 50 member or less organization can. Being in one of those smaller groups, with groups nearly twice our own, I feel we are closer. Some people in those large groups do not know most of the older brothers and tend to stay around their pledge class only. Pledge classes become cliques. Its dangerous, and one organization on my campus is already feeling the pain from it, getting in trouble for related things.

Uh, you can't debate a "bigger is better" point by turning around and saying that "smaller is better". Different chapters work for different people, period.

FWIW - I interpreted alphatau's use of the word "relevant" as meaning relevant to the discussion of the empty fraternity houses.
