Discovery Channel: Moonshiners
(I did not do a search so there may already be a thread.)
I watch this show. Am I the only GCer who watches it? Any thoughts?

I have mixed thoughts on this show. On one side, this is generations of tradition going back to the 1700s moonshining. One of the men brings his son with him so moonshine can be passed to younger generations. The most famous (or infamous, based on the law) moonshiner is on this show. They talk about moonshiners (and illicit drugs, in general) funding The Declaration of Independence and other sociopolitical things throughout American history.
On the other side, this is illegal and, as with illicit drug distribution and selling, there is a history of violence and crime associated with it. Moonshining is dangerous, they can be arrested and imprisoned, and there are moonshine competitors who will shoot people over this stuff.
I don't care about the debate over whether moonshine and drugs should be legal or illegal. It IS illegal. Period. People can debate the laws all they want to but they should be abiding by the laws in the meantime.
One thing is for sure, there is a level of bias in the fact that this show is able to exist. This show films them as they look for places to make the moonshine, as they evade law enforcement, and as they distribute it to moonshine dealers. That would not be happening if this was a different demographic and a different type of "illegal substance." In fact, they showed a scene episodes ago where a Black man was being arrested for being linked to the moonshine industry...among other industries. Hmmm...what about the white men who are doing this show? The show shows the ATF's and ABC's confidential informants and scenes of the law enforcement meetings and nightly trips to find moonshiners.

We're watching it right now. We didn't know what night it was on and just happened across it.

Well, Tim and Tickle certainly aren't as genteel as Miss Emily and Miss Mamie on The Waltons.

LOL. No, they aren't. They are so serious about it, though. So serious. It reminds me of some of the "moonshine tales" I always heard about from the Black South. They were so serious about it.

I watch it occasionally. With some of the episodes I've seen I thought it was funny watching the police hide out in the woods waiting for the same folks they've been trying to catch drive by.

And the same folks who are being filmed for the show. LOL.
The police and the moonshiners are all being filmed. If this isn't staged reality television, I don't know what is. LOL.

So live-in and I were trying to figure out how they even film the show (how are they not caught with the same camera crew following them around that are following the law enforcement folks around?). What it seems like is that the moonshiner's contracts are different than those of law enforcement. The law enforcement part is shot fairly recently, but some of the moonshiner footage is several years old.

I was getting ready to feel hoodwinked and bamboozled but Sutton is not shown as often as the others. They present him as the holy bible of moonshine a few times every other episode. His whole entire life revolved around moonshine to the point where he committed suicide to avoid prosecution.
I guess it would take a couple of years of filming and editing to get episodes of the moonshiners and law enforcement.

it was a bummer when Popcorn died. his funeral was on the news, since he lived in Tennessee and a lot of musicians were fans of the man. i saw the documentary on him a couple years ago on PBS and it stuck with me. i think they use some of the footage on the Discovery Channel show.
there's lots of moonshine around here. a mason jar or jug usually comes out at parties or get-togethers. not just "hillbillies" or country people. business leaders, doctors, attorneys, cops, robbers, drug dealers, grandparents and musicians. everybody likes it and some have favorite flavors. i like plain old white lightning, but blueberry is pretty good. so is peach.
"yeah, i made all kinds of liquor in my time.
i made the fightin' kind...
the lovin' kind...
the cryin' kind...
i even made some one time and sold it to this couple.
they was happily married, the next dam week they was divorced.
This I'm goin' to make today got 4 damn fights to a pint."
-Popcorn Sutton (as he's filling a mason jar.)

New episode tonight. Next week is the season finale.
They showed a moonshine deal tonight. It was kind of funny seeing the "reality show" tension over whether it was a true dealer or a federal agent. Seeing him put all of those plastic gallons of moonshine in the truck (it looked like gallons of water) was funny.
I guess they spent a few years filming this since Sutton is dead and they keep showing him.

LOL. On one end, I cannot blame them for not really making moonshine on the show--or claiming that they are not really making moonshine on the show.
It IS illegal.
