Question Is Greek Life Transferable/

My univ. is having their rush next semester and I would like to pledge but I'm most likely going to transfer within the next year and a half or so to pursue my major (which isn't offered here) and I was wondering if I will still be considered a sister (hopefully assuming I make it) at the new university. When I go to my next school I would already be a 5th year senior or I would just hold off on pledging until I got there. What's the consensus on this?

A lot of this depends on your school. In a lot of cases, it's hard to be offered a bid or have a wide choice of sororities as a junior, let alone a senior.

If you do get a bid at your current school, it's possible that 1) the chapter of your org at the school you transfer to may not automatically accept all transfers 2) or even if they do, you may not like them or they may not like you. Then you're either stuck in a sorority that you dislike, or you'll end up terminating your membership or going early alum.

May I ask why it's taken you this long to decide to pledge a sorority in the first place?

(I am assuming this is for NPC sororities. If it is for NPHC groups, don't listen to a word I just said.)

The sorority I want to pledge is currently suspended at my university. They wont be reinstated until next semester. They've been on suspension for three years now.

Is this an NPHC or an NPC sorority?

(NPHC sororities are Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta. Do not state which one it is that you're interested in, if that is the case.)

I am in an NPHC fraternity.

If you were my friend asking me this question, I would tell you to prepare to apply to membership at the FIRST opportunity.

I know or know of several NPHC members in practically all nine of the orgs who have joined and one campus and transferred to another campus as an undergraduate. But that will be a conversation to have with a graduate advisor should you make it to that point.

In a million years I wouldn't have guessed this was going to be about NPHC. I really wish people would provide more information on their original post. 33girl is always so good about being careful to qualify her statements, but a LOT of people could have given her exactly wrong information, of no fault of their own.

If they need to come to GC at all.

To piggyback on Senusret's answer:
It depends. Knowing going into it that you will be transferring will not work for every chapter; and withholding that you plan on transferring will fail miserably at some chapters. Research and contact the necessary people to figure out what you need to do and what your options are. Good luck.

If you are accepted, please understand that membership is a lifetime commitment. The local chapter is only the vehicle through which you join the national organization.

If you have to transfer, dont sweat it because it happens all the time. However, please keep in mind that some organizations require transfer students to have a certain number of credits at the new school to be eligible to apply for membership.

Do you mean non-members? Or do you mean that you could initiate, then transfer, and be on some sort of interim status until you had enough credits to affiliate?
