Disturbing details in report on alleged fraternity hazing
By Carol Ferguson
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The long investigation
report into an alleged fraternity hazing incident
involving CSUB students shows a pattern of
increasing violence, and an effort to keep one
pledge from reporting his serious injuries.
Three suspects face misdemeanor charges, accused in the incidents
involving the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity.
On Friday Deandre Horn had a court conference.
Ryan Nichols and Philemon Norris were in court on
Monday. The suspects are current or former
students at California State University, Bakersfield.
The most seriously injured pledge was Brent
McClanahan, Junior. He ended up hospitalized with
back and leg pain, and unable to walk.
At one point, fraternity members tried to keep
McClanahan from going home, in order to hide the extent of his injuries.
The police report states one pledge was so badly
hurt by the end of the fourth week of the
initiation process that he could "barely attend meetings."
"The older members also suggested that the
pledges keep (the injured student) from returning
to his residence where his parents may learn of
his condition," the report reads.
Police reports in the court documents obtained by
Eyewitness News outline more than a dozen alleged
initiation ceremonies over about a month from
late March to the end of April this year.
Officers interviewed the pledges, who said most
of the initiation sessions were in the garage at
one fraternity member's home. The meetings were
at night, and usually lasted a couple hours.
The pledges were required to learn and recite the
history of the fraternity, and punishment was handed out for mistakes.
Starting with a meeting on March 29, a pledge
told investigators the punishment was in the form
of beatings with three different types of paddles.
"During the session (the pledge) advised he was
struck approximately 20 times each by each of the
three paddles, and approximately 15 times each by
the paddle referred to as 'Thor,' 15 times each
by each member, which would equal a total of 75 times," the report says.
By April 3, the pledge told officers he was
"horse-whipped." The pledge said on April 6 he
was whipped on the chest and stomach, and also
subjected to what was called "hot wings."
The pledge described that as being stood against
a wall, while someone would slap his stomach on both sides.
"(The pledge) advised he received numerous welts
and bruising to his chest and stomach as a result," the report reads.
The pledge told officers at a session a couple
days later, he was hit by a paddle on the back,
causing so much pain that "he fell to the ground
and passed out as a result of being struck."
The pledge said a few days later they went to a
different fraternity member's home, and the
hazing there included a pellet or BB gun.
However, the pledges thought the gun was real.
As the pledges left, one said he heard the gun
being loaded and he was later hit in the back,
apparently by a pellet. He said another pledge was hit in the leg by a pellet.
Then, the next phase of hazing included canes.
One pledge said he as hit so hard by a cane that
he collapsed to his knees. Again, he was told not
to go home, but to go to another pledge's house for the night.
Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity was not a recognized
club or organization on the CSUB campus at the
time of the alleged incidents. All the hazing
incidents reportedly happened off campus.
Another pledge interviewed by police said all the
pledges were beaten and whipped and he "obtained
cuts on his chest area from the horsewhip which
turned into scars, bruising and (he experienced)
extreme pain on his buttocks from the paddles and cane."
A third pledge said the beatings started out more
mild, but then became "100% intensity." This
student said "the injuries he sustained caused
him to miss track events on more than one
occasion," according to the case report.
The three suspects are not the only fraternity
members discussed in the investigation reports.
On April 12, it's apparently Brent McClanahan,
Jr. who is told by an "older Kappa alumni" that
he will give him some Vicodin and muscle
relaxers. Two pledges went to alumni's home and
got the pills, according to the report.
It's apparently McClanahan who then is home, when
both legs give out, and he falls to the floor in
excruciating pain, and his family calls an ambulance.
Eyewitness News contacted Brent McClanahan, Sr.
on Friday. He said he can't discuss the case at
this point, but said he son isn't doing well.
Officers asked the pledge what he knew about
initiation into the fraternity. According to the
reports, the pledge said he had been advised by
Horn and Nichols that hazing was not permitted.
Those suspects and Norris now all have court dates set for early January 2012.
