Is Your House Haunted?
I agree that not every sight and sound is the paranormal. Since humans think we can explain everything:

Your door is breathing. No, not the come-alive-holding-a-butcher-knife breathing. "Most claims of this type of paranormal activity in the northern United States are made between the months of October and March," says Grant Wilson, co-host with Jason Hawes of Syfy's "Ghost Hunters." Here's why: "In the winter, the heating system evaporates moisture in the wood, making doors contract and causing them to become unlatched."
A small draft. When a door opens or closes, it can raise or lower indoor air pressure, causing another door to move.
Bad hardware. "Not long ago, we went to a lady's house where, during really humid days, her door's latch would be a hair off, so that it didn't fully close," Wilson says. "On particularly windy days, the door would open by itself."

What say you, GCers? Are some of the stories in our paranormal thread a bunch of hooptyhaaaa?

My house is haunted by a "friendly" ghost. I believe it is the old lady who lived here before me. If I go out of town for a day or two, when I get back, there is usually a light on somewhere in the basement. Often it's in the alcove under the porch, which I go into like once a year. So I know it wasn't me. I'm also really OCD about checking things to make sure they are off, especially if I am going to be gone for a few days. The light has a string, but it's not long enough for the cats to reach or anything.
There's really no other explanation.

I absolutely believe that the paranormal DOES exist, but I'm guessing that a large percentage of things that people classify as paranormal can be debunked (to borrow a word from a popular ghost hunting investigation team).
People often jump to conclusions and immediately label something unexpected as paranormal, instead of trying to figure out "normal" causes. It's important to observe (and document) details like weather, time of day, who's home, people's moods, etc., to try to find explanations.

But what if it isn't her?
