Floating

We're in work week right now and since we just have so many girls this year and I am just a Sophomore, I was one of the unlucky who was named a floater. I'm pretty upset by this and I know each chapter works differently, but is there any advice you can think of to still make this a great recruitment for me. Or anything you can think of that I can do to help others out when they are actually recruiting?

actually, floaters often have the ability to meet more pnms than people who are assigned to be a hostess for one. the hostess often stays with one girl for the whole party, while the floaters can navigate from one group to the other(or however your chapter sets up the rotation). learn this year how to hold dazzling conversations with total strangers, and what types of girls your chapter is looking for, and i'll bet you that next year you will be a hostess-unless you like being a floater and want to continue on in the capacity.

I hope that I will be able to mix and mingle a bit, but for our chapter the floaters are only called out basically if something goes wrong unfortunately!!

So, you have the ability to make things right. You have the ability to meet a pnm who, for whatever reason, isn't clicking with your sister. You have the responsibility to help your chapter maintain and boost their reputation as a welcoming fun place. You may make more of a difference than you ever imagine.

How would you know this when you said this will be your first recruitment as a member? I am willing to bet the folks you heard this from likely have never worked on a committee that handles things behind the scenes during recruitment or are not/have not been responsible for making the choices of who is a floater and who is a hostess.

Floaters are just as important as the hostesses. I wouldnt look at it as a bad thing at all. I myself was a permanent floater as an active and I've since become the recruitment advisor and advisory board chair. I personally rather enjoyed being a floater because I found it less stressful and as someone else said, I was able to meet more PNMs and know better what was going on during the parties.

I would consider it an honor! Your sisters obviously feel that you have what it takes to fix bad conversations, and to talk to anyone - and that's a gift!

In my chapter floaters are left exclusively to seniors. I have waited my whole tenure to be one! Be excited! It means they trust your ability to be an excellent recruiter and fill in, without messing things up, when needed. I personally am totally stoked for my turn. So, think of it as a compliment, and be thankful you aren't in the kitchen!

I think you'll find that you still have plenty of things to do -- helping any of your sisters that need it. I also think that you will still meet far more PNM's than you might have thought that you would have met. Like everyone's already said, being a floater is not a bad thing. You will be able to notice things about the PNM's from a different vantage point, and can contribute this information during discussions. Think of yourself as an essential part of your chapter's recruitment efforts. Floater or not, that is what you are.
