Nervous about GPA factor
Hey guys,
Sorry if I have been making a couple threads...I'm just super duper nervous about going through recruitment at my school as a sophomore...yet oh so excited! I'm gonna give you some GPA information from the sororities but hide their names, and I will not say what school I go to.
I have a solid 2.80 from freshman year...I would have had over a 3.0, if it wasn't for this one class where I suffered from huge test anxiety and got a poor grade :\ However, I went to all the sorority's websites with their GPA requirements and this is what they were:
Sorority 1- 2.75
Sorority 2- 2.50
Sorority 3- 2.50
Sorority 4- 2.75
Sorority 5- 2.50
Also, mentioned on their Greek website are the GPA averages from this past spring and they are:
Sorority 1- 2.78
Sorority 2- 3.10
Sorority 3- 2.75
Sorority 4- 2.88
Sorority 5- 3.08
Do you think I'll be safe GPA wise? Those numbers are averages and my GPA is above average for three of those...but i'm still uneasy because I'm only .2 away from a 3.0 and it's just stressful. Thanks guys!

Hey there! It could depend on a few things. First, a few background info: how manageable is your schedule this coming semester (as in how many classes are you taking)? Second, are you taking a few electives this fall or are you just getting into the core classes for your major?
A 2.8 is not bad, though! It's a very respectable B- (actually, a middle-ground B-...a 2.7 is the start of a B- I believe). It also depends on the size of the sororities. If sororities 2 and 5 each have, say, 90+ members, I don't think you should worry. They could have quite a few girls with GPA's around, say, 3.4-3.5, which averaged with a girl with a 2.7 or 2.8, would roughly bring the average GPA to a 3.1 or so.
Best of luck, I'm really pulling for you and hope you find your sorority! Please keep us updated!

Requirements and chapter averages don't really say much when it comes to the GPAs of the girls rushing. If you're at a 2.8 rushing against girls with 3.5+ it's obvious they'll look more desirable GPA-wise.
Instead of worrying about things you can't change, focus on what you really have control of -- conversation topics, what to wear, etc. Having a great GPA is wonderful and important, but remember that the whole package is considered.

Isn't this straying into membership selection territory? Just asking...
Beyond the printed information on the Greek Life website, no one can tell you how your GPA will affect your recruitment.
Good luck to you!

Could not agree more, AlphaGam. Great post!
Grades are important, yes, but they really want to get to know you, "Regina The Rushee" in aspects more than what your grades are. If you can make good conversation, and are polite and express a strong desire in philanthropy work and giving back to the community in general, then you'll definitely hit it off and increase your chances of getting a bid. Various sororities will remember you (in a good way!), and invite you back in order to get to know you better.
Best of luck, and keep us posted!

Quit obsessing. There is nothing you can do about it...right?! Last thing you want to do is walk into recruitment twitching and muttering 2.8. If it's not good enough, you'll find out soon enough. No one on this board can tell you what the chapters on your campus will do. Chill. Be confident in the things you can control.

Clarification question for wareagle93: aren't you a fraternity member? Or did I miss out on your sorority affiliation?

Before folks jump all over you -- sorority recruitment is a much different animal than fraternity recruitment. The fraternity guys generally steer clear of giving sorority advice on this forum

The reason AzTheta asked you that is because fraternity membership selection and sorority membership selection are two very different animals. What you said may hold true for fraternities, but not for sororities. It's good to try and help someone out but false hope and potentially incorrect information never help anyone.

It's hard to keep track of all the War Eagle usernames sometimes, especially in the middle of Auburn rush. I didn't even know 93 was a dude.

Indeed. And I wasn't jumping, I was seeking clarification.

Hahaha ok guys I didn't mean for the whole Auburn guy thing to occur, but I appreciate his encouragement. I will say I'm pretty good with conversations and I already have my outfits planned out for each round (will be sporting Lilly) I love Lilly! I just wanted to hear some opinions about the GPA stuff to see if I least somewhat met the requirement. Hopefully everything will work. Thank you guys! And if anyone gives anymore advice about the GPA thing or whatever, you can keep advising
