UNT Recruitment

Hello! I'm going to University of North Texas this fall semester. I would like to go through recruitment but I'm not to sure what I should expect. I've looked through the website to try and find some information about the UNT sororities but I can't find much about UNT specifically My parents are afraid that a sorority would take up all my time and I won't be able to focus on school. One of my fears is that the sororities will be mostly about partying. The reasons I would like to join a sorority is because I think that the whole idea of lifetime sisterhood and volunteering for a cause that you believe in is something I would love to be a part of. I've also read on their greek life website that letters of recommendation are required to pledge at certain sororities on campus. I've tried to find people that use to go to high school with me who have joined sororites who could write me a recommendation but I haven't had any luck getting someone to reply. My great aunt knows some women who were in sororites so she too is trying to help me. My local panhellenic that could have helped me get recommendation letters but they just closed for the year. Basically I'm not having too much luck and I don't know what else to do to find recommendation letters. Any suggestings? Another thing I think would hurt me in recruitment is that I am shy at first but when you get to know me I have a huge personality. Part of me thinks that I would feel especially shy at first in this situation because I am not the cookie cutter image of what I believe sororites are looking for. Overall I am just looking for some good solid advice. I am also looking for what exactly I should expect when going through recruitment at UNT. All answers would be appreciated. Sorry if these questions are already answered.

You want to consult an alumnae panhellenic, not a collegiate one. Even if they aren't having meetings over the summer, they wouldn't be "closed" and members would still be able to write recs for you.

I have a hunch that she does mean the alumnae panhellenic. Some of the ones in Texas do "close" by now because recs are due to UT so early.

To the OP- if you are indeed in Texas, then you can't really spit without finding sorority alumnae. Just start asking around- teachers, friends' parents, church members, etc. The chapters that are at UNT have tons of alumnae in the North Texas region. This can be done, and it is not too late to solicit recs on your own.

While UNT is a more "laid back" recruitment compared to the SEC, it is a good idea to get recs. If you are from the DFW area most high schools have an alumnae panhellenic group that you can find out about in your HS counseling office. Other ideas, are to ask your friends mom's if they were in a sorority and will write you a rec. (and who else they might know) Church is another great option for you ask around. Make sure you have packets ready to go.

As for being shy at first that is hard, try and work on conversation skills over the summer with those you don't know well. Also use the search option on here there is a great thread on what to say and not to say, and others that can give you some guidance.
