Recruitment advice I heard today!
Today I asked a girl who went to my high school and graduated from my same college for a rec for her sorority, not only was she glad to oblige, she offered me this advice from her experience. I thought it was awesome advice so I decided to post it here!
Here is some advice I wish I would have gotten...
1. Rush can suck sometimes, I got cut from most of the chapters I liked. It all works out, I promise (your Pi Chis will say this over and over again). I got cut from 5 chapters the first day and was trying to figure out what was wrong with me. Sometimes, they just know you aren't a good fit- you'll be surprised once you finish rush and get to know people in the chapters, you'll understand.
2. Never, ever, ever suicide a chapter (at the end of the week this is when you only preference one chapter aka you are saying I want this chapter or NONE). You'll regret it, and once you make that choice you can't go back. However if you join a chapter and end up disliking it, you have the option to drop. Even if your last chapters are your least favorite, there are other girls in your same boat and it is worth it to give it a try! I have a few friends who made this mistake freshmen year and didn't end up in a sorority and really regretted it.
3. Don't ONLY talk about how awesome you are. I had a girl who literally said "I had a 4.0, ha ha write that down and don't forget me". Psychoooo. I always had funny stories from summer/life to tell in case things get awkward with the chick you are talking to (oh, and it will happen, there are some awkward broads out there). Don't just talk about grades to the "smart" chapters or sports to the "sporty" chapters etc. They get bored hearing about it because everyone thinks that is what they are supposed to talk about at that chapter and it comes off fake sometimes (just personal experience). I broke this rule hardcore and got cut from those houses. Doesn't mean you can't mention it, but don't only talk about it you know?
4. Don't judge an entire chapter based on one dud of a girl that you spoke with. Trust me, EVERY house has different girls and one weirdo doesn't not mean the whole chapter is.
5. Don't listen to what your friends say. I was a Pi Chi my Junior year. And it was unbelievable the stories the girls told me. I had a girl tell me she was going to cut ___ because she didn't do sports and they were sporty- yeah I have played zero sports for ___. A lot of the stuff the girls rushing have "heard" is totally bogus. There really isn't anything about ANY of the chapters that should prevent you from joining I PROMISE. When I rushed I heard one of my favorite houses was going to tear down the house and build a new one (so I wouldn't get the sorority-house experience) and almost cut them. The house is still standing (My mom heard this from a girl in THAT sorority).
6. Have fun with it. You'll meet a lot of cool people. Be yourself. Be outgoing, people like talking with girls that aren't socially awkward.
