Continuous Open Bidding! Advice needed!
I am a second semester freshman at a small, private college. Even though I was pretty interested in sorority life, I didn't go through recruitment week because I am strongly considering transferring after this year (I love my school, I just can't really handle being away from home. I also can't exactly afford (money wise) to stay at a school where I'm soo homesick. So I'd be transferring home to a MUCH cheaper school). But anyway, one of the sororities on campus has continuos opening bidding starting tomorrow night and I think I might try it out! I know a few of the sisters and they're all very nice! It's a local sorority, so my schools chapter is the only chapter.
...I still feel kind of bad about trying it out since I might not be here after this year. I'm afraid that I'll get really close to the sisters and not want to transfer, but still have to because of money. And I don't want people resenting me for going through the whole process and leaving. Someone told me to "just try it! you'll be a sister for life no matter where you are!"
Does anyone have any advice/opinions on this?
Thanks!

If you are expecting to leave your school, what is it that you are aiming to get out of joining the sorority? If this local sorority is like other Panhellenic sororities, a good portion of your semester will involve new member programming (which is not always fun, as it is often a lot of meetings, mandatory stuff, etc.), and then nearer to the end I'm assuming you'll be getting to the more fun stuff, like finally getting to know all of your sisters, social events, big/little, etc. Since you'll probably only be getting 1/2 of a semester of the Greek life experience that most people join for, I don't see why you would join. You can still be friends with all of the girls in the time you are still at your school, but why make a commitment to something you know you won't be committed to?
Also, if you told someone that you might not be there next year, and they tried to get you to try it anyway, it sounds like they are desperate for numbers and not focused on getting girls to be a part of their sisterhood. I don't know if that's the case, but it seems like they're more concerned with raking in a large pledge class than anything. If a girl came through recruitment at UGA and said they were probably transferring next year, you can pretty much bet she won't make it past one or two rounds of recruitment, because there are enough girl who want that spot in the pledge class AND will be there to contribute to the sorority for the next 4 years.

Agreed. Basically you'd just be using these women to satisfy your own curiosity.

Agreed. And if you're on the fence about being about to afford school or not, then adding the expense of a sorority won't help things at all.

Keep in mind sorority life does cost money. But if you're looking for a way to perhaps ease your homesickness, finding a sisterhood is a good way to start! Just remember it's about lifelong commitment, and not about just joining to get letters.

Sororities cost money! If money is an issue, and you want to leave, it doesn't seem like the right thing to do.
