University of Arizona!

Hey! I want to go through recruitment at the University of Arizona this fall. I've found out that a lot of girls go through recruitment at this school, and that letters of rec. are recommended but not required. I really would like to have letters to help my chances but unfortunately I come from an area where not many women have been in a sorority, at least none of the ones at UA! I am continuing to ask around, but I'm wondering how crucial letters of rec. are at this school, will I be able to get in without them?

Thank you so much!

They do not have to be Arizona alums. Have you asked your parents friends, employers, school teachers/counselors, etc? They do not have to be your peers. Network, network, network. And when you find a member of one group, ask if she knows anyone in the other groups. They often do.

Good morning, and BEAR DOWN (AZ plays Duke in the Sweet Sixteen, I have no fingernails left from the Texas game last weekend). (Where's AZ-Alpha Xi this morning? and AXOrushadvisor, who also has knowledge of UofA?)

Britt, do a search here on sorority recruitment - there's an incredibly detailed thread on GC that will tell you just about everything you need to know to prepare.

http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/sh...ad.php?t=54403

That's an excellent starting point. There were a few PNMs last year who went through at UofA and posted here on GC. Search for threads on Arizona recruitment as well.

As for recommendations, as Titchou explained, start asking around, at school, church, volunteer activities, work, and so on. Be sure you've got a polished, detailed resume and photos ready. Be prepared to interview and present your very best self to any sorority woman who is willing to write you a recommendation. Recommendations are going to get you noticed in a competitive recruitment, even though you will be told that they are not needed. You want to maximize your chances.

If you're in a remote area of AZ, you're not going to have access to an area Panhellenic. In that case, I would suggest contacting either the Tucson or Phoenix area Alumnae Panhellenic Associations. AZ-Alpha Xi, what do you think she should do?

Approximately 1200 young women have registered for recruitment for the past couple of years. Recruitment is competitive. The quota has been 71, then 72 the past two years, I believe. If your GPA isn't stellar, and your activities aren't outstanding, you can expect far fewer invitations after the first round (Open House). I am telling you right now, there is NO BAD CHAPTER at the UofA. As an advisor, I've been fortunate to interact with actives and alumnae from all the chapters; you can color me impressed. It's a healthy Greek system and I strongly advise you to keep an open mind and follow your heart. You will find a home if you do so.

^^^^ what AzTheta said .. recruitment is big but there is room in the chapters for just about anyone who wants a home and keeps an open mind

both Tucson and Phoenix Alumnae Panhellenic Associations have web pages.

http://www.tucsonalumnaepanhellenic.org/

the Phoenix Panhellenic web page seems to have expired :-( so here's their facebook page

You definitely 100% need to have recommendations at Arizona in order to have a successful recruitment. Use the tips in the posts above to find them.

Thank you to everyone for the advice and information! I actually am from a state where I believe there are only 2 chapters, within the whole state! None of which have chapters at UA and there are no sororities in my town so that is where my lack of contacts is coming from. I have a strong gpa, was on my high school's cheerleading team all throughout high school, and did community service with quite a few organizations. Would it still be appropriate to contact the Tucson Alumnae Association when I am not an Arizona resident? I also realized that I know some girls a few years older than my in sororities throughout the country so I plan on contacting them. Thanks again to everyone!
