Transfer Rush UMich

I'm a potential transfer student to the university of Michigan for this coming fall, my app hasn't been reviewed yet but I stand a pretty good chance of getting in. I was a high school graduate of 09 which means next year I should be a junior, but with lost credits from transferring I will be sophomore status at UM. I'm wondering whether it would be worth my while to rush or not, I have lots of friends in some of the sororities because of my boyfriend being in a fraternity at UMich and me being there almost every weekend, I know girls in Tri-delt, KKG, KG, DZ, and AXO. I'm wondering if there are any umich alums who could let me know how common it is for sophomores to rush and such <3

What do your friends in the above sororities say when you ask them?

They would definitely tell me to rush, but I guess I'm just worried about how common it is, and and considering I'll be two years older than most of the girls in my pledge class since I'm technically supposed to be a junior

From what I've heard, it just depends on the chapter. I would suggest looking at all the chapters, because each and every one of them is outstanding. Also, there is no DZ chapter at UMich to my knowledge...

Suggest you ask your friends in sororities @ UMich, as they're your best source for answering your questions specific to recruitment there.

The Greek Life office might have statistics for you on what %age of new members are in which class (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior). That's another way to get specific answers. Try http://uuis.umich.edu/greeks/chapter...%20association

There's no DZ chapter listed on the Panhellenic website for UMich. Perhaps your DZ friends attend school elsewhere?

Who cares how "common" it is, if it's something that'll make you happy?

If the concept of having to be a pledge with younger girls and also to answer to younger girls who are initiated sorority members bugs you that much, though, you probably should skip rushing or pledging.

As a proud Michigan Alum, I can say that there is normally a good percentage of sophomores that rush and receive bids. To my knowledge, there's no chapters that openly don't take sophomores.

I would agree with the above advice as well and talk to your friends in specific chapters.

For Michigan threads, I used to post that even sophs and juniors could probably find a home because I knew we were taking them then. We've hit Total though and I don't know what the chances are at this point.. also haven't worked directly with them in many years now so I'm kinda clueless. Very odd that I know more about Purdue than U of Michigan... very very odd.

thanks everyone for the advice! I've decided that next fall I will be rushing, I have no problem whatsoever answering to younger girls and its not like they'll be that much younger anyways!

FWIW, when I was in chapter I never felt like I had to "answer to" anyone.

As a (very) recent Michigan grad, and someone who was extremely involved in recruitment, I'm so glad you've decided to go through recruitment. It is extremely common for sophomores to rush, especially if they have friends in sororities. I think it is much harder for sophomores without any sorority ties to go through recruitment. Something to consider is that grades will be important, especially as an upperclassman (though if you're transferring your grades are probably fine). Also, just because you have friends in certain sororities, there is no way they can guarantee you a bid. Good luck (and go blue!)
