Third Times a Charm Recruitment Story
Hey everyone! I found GreekChat the other day and I've been reading recruitment stories nonstop...It made me think about my own recruitment this past fall and how I really want to share my story with the world. I LOVE being Greek! I tell everyone that I was born to be Greek, I just want to shout it from the rooftops! So this is a way to share a bit of the pride I have in my sorority and the Greek community in general.
I'm a Junior at a pretty small commuter university in Metro Detroit. We have only 3 NPC chapters:
Delta Phi Epsilon
Phi Mu
Phi Sigma Sigma
For this story I'll refer to them as my favorite pops, since I'm craving caffeine lol:
(in no order)
Vernors
Dr. Pepper
Cream Soda
Anyways, my freshmen year (fall of 2008) I went to some of the summer events, met some of the girls and talked about Greek life. One of the Rho Gams (technically Rho Gammas obv, but I guess we are lazy since we usually leave off the 'ma') had graduated from my high school and our younger sisters were friends, so she really wanted to see me go through recruitment. I had made a few friends over summer, however, and I was worried that by joining a sorority I wouldn't have time for them, so I decided to not go through recruitment at all. I started dating a guy on campus, so I was involved and whatnot, and everyday I would see girls wearing letters...I seriously regretted not going through. I promised myself I would really actually go through with it in the Fall of 09 (since none of our chapters do winter/informal recruitment).
I promise to update this really soon, since I'm really excited about telling my story! Probably tomorrow morning though, since tonight is my Semi-Formal!

Go to the Greek Life Forum, and read about the Brothel Law. If it ever - EVER! - existed, it no longer does.

So I had an amazing time at my first semi-formal last night =)
Anyway, I left off with my decision to not go through recruitment my freshman year.
Fall of 2009 came, and this time I officially signed up for recruitment and paid my $25 and everything.
We have 4 days of recruitment: the first is Sisterhood Night, then Philanthropy Night (Tuesday and Wednesday). These two are open houses; PNMs only have to attend one and the night lasts about 2 hours. The next night is Traditions Night (Thursday), where each sorority usually has a skit or performance of some type. Friday there are no events. Saturday morning is Pref, where PNMs can attend a max of 2. Then we break for lunch and when we come back in about 2 hours, we get our Bids and announce our new sisterhood to everyone, which is followed by Rho Gam reveal.
This was in 09, so please forgive the relative lack of detail in my descriptions. I'll just summarize the whole week with my impressions of each room.
Cream Soda- This is the smallest chapter on our campus, and these girls tend to be regarded as 'weird'. I went in not wanting to be a Cream Soda, which I realize in retrospect was not cool. However, throughout the week, I started feeling a connection with these girls. It was obvious that they cared very much about each other, and I did like their philanthropy since it was a cause close to my heart. One of the actives had gone to my high school and had been in band too, so I really hit it off with her. I was so concerned about their image on campus though, so I wouldn't let myself see my home there.
Dr. Pepper- Being a sophmore, I did have a general impression of each sorority and these girls had a reputation of being the party animals on campus. I loved their room though, it was so cheery and pretty and the decorations made me happy. I went in thinking that this would be my second choice, but as recruitment went on I realized that I just really didn't have anything to say to these girls...there was no connection. I liked their philanthropy and their motto and colors, basically I liked their organization but I didn't like their chapter, if you know what I mean. Still, I was just a sophmore and I was determined to go where I would be popular, so I had them as my second choice.
Vernors- This is the chapter that everyone wants to be a part of. They are the 'cool' girls on campus: really nice and friendly to everyone, involved in everything, etc, so naturally Vernors was the chapter I wanted to join. I went into the room and tried to say everything I thought they wanted to hear. I wouldn't say that I wasn't being my real self, but I did try to chose my words more carefully. In retrospect though, I realize that at the time I thought I was making connections, I really didn't...at the end of the week, my opinion was unchanged.
After Thursday night, we have to chose which 2 we would accept a Pref invite from. I knew in my heart that I really wanted to go back to Vernors and Cream Soda, but again I was concerned about my image. I talked to my Rho Gam, and she told me (in confidence of course) that since Cream Soda was so small and they needed members, they would be inviting every PNM to their pref ceremony. Knowing this, my rankings were as follows:
1 Vernors
1 Dr. Pepper
2 Cream Soda
When I got there Saturday, they called us each into a seperate room individually and told us our schedule for the day. I eagerly awaited my turn, but when I heard that the only Pref I was invited to was Cream Soda's, I was devastated. I was one of those obnoxious girls who cried and called her mom. I went to their pref, but I wasn't really into it. I thought about it for a while, and while I knew I'd get the same sisterhood experience, I just didn't feel the connection with the Cream Sodas that I was looking for. So I didn't sign a Bid Card and I went home...
I'll continue this story tomorrow, for now its homework time =(
