FSU Chi Omega student
Thoughts and prayers with the FSU Chi Omega's and Ashley's family.
Quote:
A Florida State University student from Orange Park was shot and killed early Sunday morning in an off-campus fraternity house. Ashley Cowie, a 21-year-old sophomore, died in what Tallahassee police are describing as an accidental shooting.
A second student was injured and another from Ponte Vedra Beach has been arrested.
According to police, Evan Wilhelm, a 21-year-old junior from Ponte Vedra Beach, was showing his rifle to friends in the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity house when it accidentally discharged, striking Cowie in the chest and then Keith Savino, a 21-year-old junior from Tampa, in the wrist.
Wilhelm has been arrested and charged with manslaughter, a second-degree felony.

How terrible. If you have a gun, you should really take a gun safety course. Showing off a loaded gun is totally irresponsible. My heart goes out to Ashley Cowie's family and all her Chi Omega sisters. What a senseless tragedy.

Yeah he shouldn't have been showing off his loaded gun. I feel sorry for her family and I feel sorry for him too since he has to live with the fact that he killed someone in such a stupid way.

Is it just me or does anyone else think loaded guns should be banned from Greek houses?
I feel bad for all involved.

Loaded guns in the house so often cause tragedy. Last week, one of my former students was killed by someone showing him his loaded gun. When my uncle was a teenager, his friend was showing him his supposedly unloaded gun and killed him. I can think of several cases over the years where someone was killed while being shown a gun.

Uneducated gun owners often think their gun is unloaded when one is in the chamber. Some states have mandated education, and the NRA campaigns on education. Unfortunately, we still see these types of mistakes. It is so sad...
I grew up with tons of guns, mostly rifles in my home, and my dad always taught us to NEVER point a gun at someone. My brother, when he was eight, pointed a gun at me, and I flipped out. He never did that again. I don't own a gun, and am conflicted about the issue now. If you have guns, please, please...store them away from your children in a gun safe with the bullets somewhere else and educate everyone near them about gun safety!!

Sending Theta love and prayers to the family in Orange Park and over to the sweet Chi O's in Tally. I can't believe he didn't disarm it before showing it off... but it's a terrible accident and I don't wish that kind of guilt on anyone. Sending peace and healing prayers to him and his family.

My brother was showing me how to operate and clean a new gun he had purchased...but it was loaded. Unfortunately, something went wrong and it went off. Thank God my grandparents/parents taught us NEVER to point a gun in the direction of a person, even if we think it's unloaded. No one was injured, but boy did we get into trouble (for good reason). I fully agree with Benzgirl about loaded guns being banned from Greek Houses.
My prayers go out to everyone affected by this tragedy.

My heart goes out to all of those affected by the situation.
However, I'm just shocked at how something like this actually showed up as a very real risk management issue gone wrong.
Main things I'd like to know is:
- Since he's a graduate, why did anyone allow him on the house with the gun?
- Why didn't anybody deny him of alcoholic drinks if he had the gun? Judgment is the first thing that goes when it comes to alcohol.
- He never checked to see whether or not the gun was loaded before bringing it?!
I hope he thinks long and hard about it in jail and doesn't get out until he's matured significantly.
