Photo Scavenger Hunts

My guess is that just about every fraternity and sorority has rules against scavenger hunts, but are there groups with specific rules regarding whether photo scavenger hunts are acceptable?

How do photo scavenger hunts eliminate any of the risks that typical scavenger hunts incur?

You aren't taking/stealing things.

You can put a photo of the school mascot on the list for a photo scavenger hunt and the football team won't have to hunt down where the mascot outfit is early Saturday morning.

Lack of theft mostly. Although you could write one that required vandalism/theft/other criminal activities.

Theft is not the only risk incurred and, as Drole said, you could still require something illegal. You still have the risk of people racing around a campus and not paying attention to traffic or racing in cars trying to "win". You still have the risk of "consequences" for not achieving tasks. With photos, you have the risk of evidence of possible unethical, immoral or illegal acts existing and being posted on the Internet.

If you ban everything that could result in students doing something stupid, what is left for them to do ...?

I think the point is that there's probably no reason to specifically allow photo scavenger hunts when scavenger hunts have been prohibited for multiple reasons - illegal activities, hazing, etc. Photo scavenger hunts only potentially alleviate one of the concerns.

Whether or not they should be banned altogether is another issue, but most (many? some?) organizations have found it simpler to do so at this point.

My chapter got slapped on the wrist for having a photo scavenger hunt in which one of the pictures had to be a dude with one of our letters written on each butt cheek.

So, you know, bad idea.

I know that (at least in my chapter and on my campus) it's okay to do a scavenger hunt as long as it takes place only on sorority property. For example, we did a scavenger hunt with clues throughout the house to find our big on big/little night. That's perfectly harmless and fun! I can see where other kinds of scavenger hunts could go awry, which is sad because they're so much fun.
