Generation Y
I have been really absent from the land of GC lately because I've been working like a crazy person. I find GC is the best place to come whenever I have a breather. Even if it's only to read the posts.... But I do admit that I have an ulterior motive for checking in tonight...
I'm curious to know if I"m alone in this or if anyone else finds them selves, or has at some point found themselves, feeling the same way...
Is anybody else out there out of University with no idea in the world what they want to do with their lives?
I always thought I'd figure it out while I was in school....2 years later, I still have no idea.
Can anyone commisserate? Or at least offer some great advice???

I felt like everybody else had it together and knew what they wanted to do. Then, I was talking to my roommate yesterday and for 8th time, she has switched her major. She is on the 6 year plan. One of my sisters graduates this fall. She has no idea what she wants to do. My big sister is freaking out because she doesn't want to go into the real world and work. A friend of mine graduated two years ago with a degree in speech pathology. He is now working in pharmaceutical sales and is now going to get his masters in Sociology. I guess it's not me...it's just a generation problem.

definetly relating. It's funny how so long ago you think you have everything planned and then as you go through school and you get older nothing is what it seems to be. Here I am getting degrees and have no clue what I want to do. I think with me it's just I am indecisive , cause theres just soooo much I want to do. I mean for instance for those of you who don't know me as well.I am a double major and a double minor talk about indecisive and
not knowing what I want to do.So gphi2k I am definetly relating

Oh, you are so not alone. I graduated 2 years ago, moved to DC and got a DREAM job, perfect for my major and was MISERABLE. So, I stayed 9 months, packed up, moved to Atlanta where all my friends were, took a job that pays the bills but is in NO WAY dream, and I am sooooo happy. And now grad school looms ahead in the next year. Just remember to make yourself happy before anyone else. I feel like those first years out you need to make all about you and then, you will be ready to find out who you really are. But I still wonder what I want to be when I grow up!

You're not alone...
I can tell you that there are DEFINITELY other people out there who don't have a clue what they want to do with their lives. One of my best friends has been out of school for 2 years and has jumped from job to job ever since. She has been unhappy with every career choice she's made since graduation, and told me last night how much she admired me for having my life "together". Now, I'll be the last person to say that my life it "together", but I guess when I look at it from her point of view, I am definitely in a different stage of life than she is, even though we're the same age.
Sooo, to all of you who aren't quite sure where they're going or how they're going to get there, I say "keep your chin up". You'll figure it out eventually. It just takes longer for some than others. Doesn't mean that you're doing anything wrong!

Yeah, I definitely know what you mean. After five years in school and another year travelling and attempting to postpone the inevitable I finally got a REAL job. However, it seems like I spent the last six years of my life preparing for now. Once you're there it's like okay.... now what? Guess you keep trying to get ahead at work, kind the perfect man and settle down. It does seem sort of anti-climactic though when you reach this point you've been trying to get to for so long and it isn't exactly everything you ever dreamed of. Oh well, such is life...

I am in the same boat; see previous thread titled Emotional Breakdown.
I have 37 more days till I'll be out of school and my house here, with a degree. No job yet; I have some good prospects. Part od me wants to join the Air Force; another part of me wants to go to grad school. I have dreams of moving out to California or Arizona. Part of me wants to go back home to Kentucky, while St. Louis and Chicago also apeal to me. But I don't have a job yet, and I'll be stuck with a car payment and student loans.
I am just going one day at a time; realizing things will work out for the best no matter what.
I wish you the best!

I definately relate..I think we all do in some way.
We're young..trying to figure out where we stand in this world. For instance, all my life I only thought I'd be doing one thing- Theatre. Now that I'm here, in college, working my ass off- I've figured out it's not really want I want. I want normalcy..I want to get a career...get married, have babies..live in a nice house with a white pickett fence and a dog. With theatre, I'd be auditioning all my life, I'd have no time to get married, anything-
Fortunately, I have just recently as in, two days ago, redeclared my major and I'm so much happier.
Political Science- Pre-Law.

Kind of a long way from theatre, hmm?
Always,
Jess

Not really. It takes balls to get up in a courtroom and do your thing. Not everyone has the stomach for that. I'm a former theater geek (haven't done a show since HS) and I plan on going to law school next year. Lawyers (at least a lot of the ones I've come across) are not shy introverts. They're willing to get up in front of people. So its not that far of a switch in my mind
Good luck!

I agree with Tom!
In college alone I was--
Art Major
Communications Major
Creative Writing Major with Art Minor/Film Critical Studies Minor
Since College I've-
Sold Cheerleading Supplies (so fun! ha ha)
Wrote Ad Copy for advertising agency
Worked at a talent and literary agency
Worked for a screenwriter/director
Worked on 2 feature films as a Production Assistant
Worked as a personal assistant to actors/actresses
Worked as a freelance script reader
Worked as Human Resources/Operations for dot-com
Worked as a writer covering the entertainment industry
And all this in a mere TEN YEARS.
Very few people will do exactly what they thought they'd be doing. Fewer still will stick with that for more than a few years.
Life is short and there's too much to learn and too much to do to stay stuck in one field forever.

This isn't quite the same thing... but, I've been out of college for a couple of years now, and I'm trying to figure out what direction I want to take with my career.
All my life I wanted to be a software engineer. Now I am one - and I want to be a manager. Yep, after all those years of reading Dilbert, I actually want to *be* a Pointy Haired Boss. (Hey, don't knock it - PHB's get offices!)
I also have a whole list of hobbies I'd like to indulge (and make money from) ... writing, singing, painting, game creation (board, card, video), etc.
You just have to figure it out as you go along... like the saying goes, "Life is what happens while you're making other plans."
