George Mason Recruitment
Hello ladies. My lovely younger sister will be attending George Mason University this coming fall and I was wondering how competitive recruitment there is. She is excited to go Greek, but a little nervous because she doesn't really know what to expect or if she'll need recs.
I tried searching the threads, but all I could find was a lawsuit against Sigma Chi.
I'm encouraging her to keep an open mind, but I couldn't help slipping in that Chi Omega has the same colors as Gryffindor.

The university web site has an entire section devoted to Greek Life at http://sa.gmu.edu/fsl/index.php . Use the drop down menu at the top.
Tell your sister that she can contact the directors for Greek Life at http://sa.gmu.edu/fsl/contact.php . THEY are the people who will have answers to a lot of her questions. THEY are the ones on campus.
If she does a campus visit, she can actually have the chance to meet sorority women. I think a lot of members would be happy to share basic info on recruitment on the campus, as well as their own experiences.
Tell her to search the RECRUITMENT threads here for some really good advice. While people CANNOT tell her what her chances are, etc., the general info and advice applies across the board. Hundreds of thousands of people have gone through recruitment/rush without someone walking then through the process online.

Hey Ooh La La, I'm a current student at Mason. Send congratulations to your sister, Mason is a great place to be right now!
I would not characterize recruitment here as being very competitive. The majority of girls who go bid-less have probably not maximized their options. Some rumors and tent-talk can be harsh, and they are all very out of date. At present all six chapters are right around total, so rumors of weaker chapters are quite untrue. All the chapters have a lot to offer and will provide a very full sorority experience. Encourage her to maximize her options and ignore tent-talk to assist in a successful recruitment!
I'm not sure about recs, but she should join the Panhellenic Recruitment Facebook Group ( http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=109272429105796) so she can ask questions and get the most up-to-date information from Panhellenic Exec.
SthrnZeta's recruitment story takes place at Mason, so you might want to give that a read, though a few things have changed since she went through recruitment. If you have any other questions please feel free to let me know!

Thanks for the shout out Gusteau! When I saw the thread title, I was like, no way! And I knew you probably already posted on it, lol.
I went through recruitment at GMU in Fall 2001. It wasn't THAT long ago, but long enough for some things to have changed. Feel free to IM me at SthrnZeta or PM me on here and I'll help out however I can.
Recs were unheard of there when I went through. A decent number of PNMs went through and total there is still 90, though a couple chapters tend to go over that during FR. According to the TLC who just visited ZTA there, most chapters are near or at total right now. I would tell her to visit the chapters' tables in the Johnson Center whenever they're out there and also talk with the girls at the Rho Gamma table prior to FR, definitely keep an open mind, and have fun during FR - you end up meeting some great girls that may or may not end up being your sister. The Greeks there help with freshman move-in and that's a good time to ask any nagging questions she may have. Again, feel free to PM me, I'd be happy to give you any sort of specifics I can, knowing that some things may have changed since I was there. Gusteau is a good resource since he's a current student and knows a good number of sorority women there also.
Also, congrats on her going to GMU! I had a wonderful time there and miss it dearly. Good luck to her!

I was shocked when I saw this too, lol, and I didn't mean to imply you went through recruitment a long time ago - I promise!
By the way, I'm wearing my DX-ZTA Homecoming t-shirt right now

Haha, I know, it's ok. You're right though, it's been long enough for things to have changed, at least a little bit. And you should wear that shirt until it's worn out!!!
Ooh la la - I wish your sister all the luck next year and hope she has a successful recruitment. Tell her to trust the system, I did and I ended up being in an extremely strong and beautiful organization and the same can happen for her. I meet sisters wherever I go and it's really awesome to know that that can happen.

Bumping because recruitment starts today, and at the very least SthrnZeta and I care. Good luck to Ooh La La's sister!
ETA: Apparantly more girls have signed up for recruitment than ever, but I don't have an official number. I only know that it's over 300.

So happy to hear so many girls have signed up for FR there. Of course, I totally care - I already commented on Theta Chi chapter's FB wall. The chapter I advise at Stetson starts recruitment at 5p tonight so I'm doubly excited this weekend! I'll definitely be stalking Theta Chi chapter's FB page for updates!!!
I wonder how the OP's sister is doing...?
EEEE!!! So excited!!!
