Facebook

So I'm not sure if this question is inappropriate but I'll ask anyway

I know that once you sign up for recruitment that sororities look at your facebook and get to know you through that before meeting you. I don't think this is a bad thing but I'm wondering what they are looking for exactly?
I understand that if you have 100 pictures of you passed out looking like a drunken mess, that'll leave an impression-a bad one!!
But are they just looking to see what kind of pictures you have, who your friends are, what you do in your free time etc...?

Just asking out of curiosity.
Thank you!

The same thing everyone facebook creeps for...information on personality, friends, pictures...that sort of thing.

If I were a current PNM I'd make my facebook profile private even though there's nothing particularly negative on my profile. I would rather their impression of me come from in person meetings where I have better control over the assumptions they might make and can answer to them. And of course, it's not very safe to leave your profile public (especially pictures, location of employment, and contact information).

If you choose to leave parts of your profile public, keep your pictures and contact information friends only for safety, and keep any scandalous posts off of your wall.

That makes sense.

Yup, I'm so paranoid when it comes to my facebook privacy I check it like once a month to make sure its ACTAULLY private lol
but I am already facebook friends with a lot of the sorority girls in my school
(I'm a sophomore) so if they do not really know me, I guess they'll go to facebook!

I'd unfriend anyone who isn't a real life friend, just to avoid any issues with your friends being skanks or whatever. Clean out your history of anything less than stellar about you, and ask your friends to nip the dirty, rude, offensive (whatever) responses to you, until after recruitment anyway. Even if you have your page private, you never know who's a friend of whom and is cutting and pasting stuff to email to someone else.

If you post some pictures of yourself in very flattering situations (you at the blood bank, you giving your Valedictorian address, you with a group of your best girlfriends having fun at something completely wholesome), you can make the best out of internet marketing.

Is there anything you wouldn't want your Mom to see on your Facebook page? Or your Grandma? Your prudish aunt? Market to them right now and you should be fine.

And I don't know that they DO searches on all the PNMs; it's just that they CAN.

Good call...if they already know you chances are they've already looked at least once. I guess it depends on the campus, but I know on ours sorority members are required to de-friend PNMs and keep their profiles unsearchable during recruitment, but PNMs don't have to do this, and we tend to peek at their profiles.

If it makes you feel any better, our chapter only searched legacies so we could get to know them better, in a good way

I would not unfriend anyone right now, even if you only "know" them through a friend of a friend. The last thing you want is for the best friend of a girl in a sorority you want to say "WTF? Dance.Laugh unfriended me." You never know who is connected to who these days and how.

Just make your profile super private. For most things you can go to custom settings and make it "only me" - that is, no one but you can see ANYTHING on your page.

This^

Right now would be a good time to make things like tagged pictures viewable by you only...and possibly your wall. (Or remove the option for people to comment on it until after recruitment to avoid any random inappropriate messages.) That way you control what is there...leave your photo albums from the family reunion and any clean pictures from things like prom viewable. Then pictures are still to be found, but at least no one will instantly see anything unflattering that your friends tag.
