Susie's BRUTALLY TRUTHFUL thread at BTSU
A young friend of mine emailed me and asked me to post her recruitment story here – she was afraid of posting it under her own name in case her anonymity was breeched:

Hi! I’ll call myself Susie. I’ve been reading the stories on GC, and thought I’d post mine. I should start by saying it’s all 100% true, and absolutely not made up for a Mr. O’Connell’s remedial Creative Writing 101 class MWF 9-11.
So I’ll just dive right in with my BRUTALLY TRUTHFUL '10 recruitment story. I go to a school I’ll call BTSU (for Better Than a State University) There are a lot of sororities at BTSU, but I’ll focus on the top five (like I would even consider anything less that Top Tier?). I’ll name the sororities after items you see in everyday life in order to keep them simple (and anonymous!)
-Arrows
-Ladybugs
-Anchors
-Triangles
-Owls
I’m a legacy at ARROWS – my first sippy cup had arrows on it, and going to any school but BTSU and being anything but an arrow was out of the question. But in recent years my mom has mellowed, and she said I could join any sorority at BTSU as long as it was Top Tier.
My roommate Chardonnay and I decided to go through recruitment together. I’m petite, blond and gorgeous. She’s about 6’2”, has very large hands, and tells me that she has a deep, dark secret. She always wears a scarf around her neck, a fashion don’t that I’ve tried to break her of, but she won’t give it up. She also wears baggy pants, and when I suggested something more form-fitting, she said “I need somewhere to hide my candy”. This surprised me, as I rarely see her eating (secret = bulimia??????) But she’s as excited as I am to start!
My first round, I went to ARROWS. OMG – it looked like a scene from Gossip Girl – everyone was pretty and thin and blond. Since I’m pretty and thin and blond, I fit right in! One of the girls was from a prominent billionaire family in our state, and she noticed my Jimmy Choos and argued that Manolos were better. We spent all of our time debating, and finally agreed on Blahniks. I hope I didn’t hurt my chances by disagreeing, because I could SO see myself being a sister here. There is one brunette in the sorority (in fact, she’s kind of East Indian- looking), but she’s a senator’s daughter, so it’s okay.
Then on to OWLS. Ugh. So many brunettes. And they were wearing Steve Madden, which, though cute, can be purchased at DSW for a reasonable price, so yuck. Plus someone was being nice to me there for no reason, so I really hope I don’t get invited back.
The girls from ANCHORS were okay. They talked a lot about how much they enjoyed their philanthropy, and my stylist won’t let me near chlorine, so it might be a problem. And they all got along so well – no drama. What’s with that? Their president went to my high school, and knows how popular I was, so I’m sure I’ll be invited back, though (safety sorority?).
Then on to TRIANGLES. Wow, was to throw a wrench into the works. After ARROWS, I thought I knew where I belonged, but they might have some competition! These girls were cute and SO FUN. They were also impressed with my Dad’s helicopter, saying it would make their super-fun road trips SO much more do-able. Their house has a heli-pad on the roof, so even more points for TRIANGLES.
Last up for the night was LADYBUGS. Wow – those girls dress up! Lots of sequins and glitter, and it’s was a “casual” round. They were all as tall as Chardonnay, and wore REALLY heavy makeup. They had GREAT taste in shoes, but I’m not sure I could borrow from anyone, because I didn’t see any Weitzmans or Guccis that were smaller than I size 10. Chardonnay says she felt right at home, which is a shame, because I was hoping we could be sisters!
I was super-torn between the fun TRIANGLES and my legacy house - the lovely ARROWS - and also LADYBUGS so that I could be with Chardonnay (not sure she’s going to fit in anywhere else). I can't wait to see where I go for 2nd rounds! Well, I have to go to bed – more later!
