Apartment ideas
Hey everyone, my buddies and I are moving into an apartment in the fall and I was wondering if anyone had some cool themes or decoration ideas. I appreciate any comments! Thanks!

Are these your frat brothers? How about something related to your org?
That's all I've got. No one here knows you, so we really can't let you know what would be cool for you.

Go to estate sales in rich neighborhoods.

Well its going to be one of my brothers and 2 other guys who are just our friends. And don't worry about my personality just shoot some ideas. I heard about blacklights and highlighter filled liquor bottles as a decoration. Or a tiki theme. Ideas like that I guess

- Butterflies and rainbows
- Unicorns
- Muppet Babies
I'm being facetious, but again, without knowing you or your buddies, no one can say what'll be cool for y'all.
Google apartment decorating ideas and search until you find something you like.

Check out www.apartmenttherapy.com
They have a section called mens style guide (or something like that) that feature more masculine design elements. I wouldn't recommend asking others for vague ideas since you're the one who's going to have to live in the space. You should focus on function and your own personal tastes, and since you will be sharing an apt ( typically smaller space) I do suggest taking a minimalistic approach.

I'm asking for ideas. Don't worry about what will be cool. What cool apartments have you been to and how were they decorated? How is your apartment decorated?

Mine isn't really decorated. I'm into the mid century modern style right now so my furniture consists of that theme. I'm also into the clean minimalistic look so less is more with me. I have an accent wall in the living room which is a dark modern green/gray color as well as a slate color in my bedroom. I have a few vinyl LPs that are framed and hanging on the wall and some of my own pictures I "created". I found some cool fabric and some vintage frames at a thrift store and I framed the fabric. It sounds weird but it's actually pretty cool if you find the right fabric.

What works best for me is to not decorate. I only get furniture if I actually need it.
For example, I got a bed in my bedroom because it's so uncomfortable to sleep on the floor. I have a table so I can do work.
There's no sofa or TV in my living room because when I have friends over, it's rarely a "sit and relax" time. I usually want to get something done, hence just a few chairs and a spartan dining table.

My roommates boyfriend did this at his apartment. I only saw it like once, but it looked awesome. He had them on his entertainment center.

My apartment is very boho, full of art pieces and pieces that I've found at thrift shops and yard sales and repurposed. Probably not something a dude would be into, but FYI, buying things like end tables at thrift stores and sanding and spray painting can save a lot of money. Like a ton. It took me one afternoon to sand and spray paint a mirror and two end tables, and counting the paint cost me about $40 total.
Most guys I know don't really bother decorating...it's a mish mash of free couches and random furniture. Which is cost effective, yeah, and when you throw parties it isn't the end of the world if someone spills a drink on the couch. All you have to do to pull it together is buy a couch cover and repaint some furniture. Pick a neutral and a color and use those to create unity. (My apartment's furniture is mostly black and brown with a deep red as an accent color...you can use a couple of cheap throw pillows for color and interest...I have some that have reds and golds in them to keep the place from being boring.)
Framed art looks more professional than posters, but that can be expensive. You can go to a thrift store and find cheap framed art and posters and either use those or take them out of the frames and reuse them. Same with mirrors.
If you have a big budget find a chain store like Pier 1 or World Market...they can suck to deal with, but they also have huge inventories and usually have a lot of stuff on sale. That way you can grab a few things you like and see them together in the store to decide if you'll like them in your apartment or not.
My boyfriend has the highlighters in a bottle thing going on at his place. Not my thing but I'll admit...it looks pretty crazy in low light and even crazier under a blacklight.

target, etc. usually sell 'color-themed' pillows, bedding etc. to make decorating easy; for wall decor check out antique shops/garage/estate sales for eclectic artwork that may strike your fancy--or beach side/street vendor artists

easiest thing to do is go to a book store and get a couple of magazines that are decorating oriented. thumb thru them before you make a purchase and if there are some things that you like, buy the magazine. i would suggest that all 4 roommates do this separately, cut out the photos that they like, tape to some construction paper, throw them on the table(or floor, if none of you have a table yet) and look thru them together. maybe you can come to a consensus on style and start hunting at thrift stores, consignment stores and estate sales.
