Recs from local panhellenic
I registered with my local panhellenic in May, went to an informational about sororities with them in June, and now I am confused how I get recs from them. I emailed the president yesterday and she said if I registered then "the rest will happen". I don't really know what that means...
She said, "Our approach to helping you is to make your registration information available to everyone (a rep from each sorority) on our board. We do this for a couple of reasons - some sororities require a rec from the girl's hometown and there may a sorority that you love that you discover during recruitment."
I just don't get it, do I contact the reps, do they contact me, or do they just write me a rec without telling me? I am just very confused.
I just have a few recs left that I need.

My local Panhellenic provides an info packet for PNM's to complete and turn back in with enough resume copies and photos to cover every GLO on the PNM's campus. Panhellenic then forwards the resume & photos to the Sponsorship Chairman for each of the respective GLO's, who in turn complete the requested recs and send them on to their group on the PNM's campus. Once the PNM turns in her completed packet, it is out of her hands and generally does not contact an individual group member directly unless she knows an alumna and she wants to request a stronger, more personal rec. This is the only Panhellenic group I've ever been involved with, so my experience is limited to how recs are handled in my area.

Ok so they just fill out the recs for every sorority? I did the same thing, turned in enough pictures and resumes for every sorority at my campus.

Yes, at least this is how it is handled by my local Panhellenic.

Thanks I hope that's the way mine does it too. I just emailed them again asking if that's the case.

Various groups do it a variety of ways. If you know you need an XYZ rec, and you know an XYZ alum, it is still fine to ask her personally to write you a rec. The alum group may also be securing a rec for you, but it doesn't hurt to have all of your bases covered.
It sounds like your group is well organized, but you might ask something like, " I am just wondering if I should still work to secure my own recs, or by registering with the panhellenic org that means I will have one rec to each house."

Some sororities require a rec from an alumna for a girl to get a bid. If they require the rec to be from an alumna from the girl's hometown, that is some sort of jacked up chapter policy and they're really missing out on a lot of great girls.

No, it's not 33girl. I know of at least one NPC group that requires a rec from the city rec/area person for the PNMs home city/area - even if she has a rec already from an individual, she's a legacy, hell freezes over tomorrow, etc, etc, etc.

That is a LOT different than "from the girl's hometown." My hometown is 75 miles from here, but if this had been the case in my rush, I wager my "area person" would have still been in Pittsburgh.
I mean, there are some TINY towns out there and if that president would have told me that, it would have freaked me out.

I know of at least one local Panhellinic that told the girls NOT to get other recs. They do meet and discuss each girl and someone always knows her personally. However, two years ago, a sorority that wanted a girl from that area did not have a rec because no one from that sorority was on Panhellinc. They did work it out and get the girl.

33girl, that's what I said. If there is no person in that city, then they have an area person. And you just never know who the person might be!

I hope you understand that the Panhellenic does not write recs on girls. Panhellenics normally collect information and hand it over to the sororities, whose alumnae then write the recs.

I know you said it right and that concept I can (sort of) understand. The APH prez in the first post who said "a rec from the girl's hometown" did not. She needed to go into a little more detail and explain if there's not a person in your HT of Podunk, there will be in Cleveland (40 miles west of Podunk).

I live in Atlanta and I sent a resume and picture to the panhellenic alumnae. I just got a few emails from people willing to write recs but i was wondering if I got any for the other sororities. Will all of the people writing recs for me contact me or will some go ahead and write one for me? Any information on how this works?
thank you

CAT 1234: you need to ask the AP contact which groups will be doing recs for you. They may not have a member from all the groups you need. Besides, you really should be trying to get them on your own also from people who already know you. Those are the best ones.
