SO????

hey i'm 28 and live in Australia. i've spent my whole life obsessed with US schools and colleges. I'm finally at a stage in my life i could go to America but would i be just passed the fun and miss out on meeting friends and partying because of my age. i'm married and would be coming over just for the experience of seeing how people live in a culture that fascinates me. married or ot i still have fun and call shenanigans with the best of them so i was just wondering am i going to spend my holiday in a hotel room or am i likely to be called out for some fun times if i research the right pubs for a few late afternoon beers

Whether or not you leave your hotel room is up to you. I pray that you have some sort of itinerary and that you're not just flying out here on a whim.

mate years of planning and dreaming hasnt made it a whim more of a dream just been spending time setting myself up for the experience. i just wanted to make sure people weren't going to give me a hard time because i was a few years older. if it was going to be that way i suppose i'd just have to think of seeing it all from the outside

Are you planning on only hanging out around colleges/universities? Those are the only places where you may get jested for being older.

There are plenty of places (outside of college/university areas) to visit that are suitable for 28-year-olds, so you should be able to find something.

What about the "US schools and colleges" are you obsessed with? Where did you get your information? Where do you plan to go? What does your wife think about you flying across the world to party with a bunch of 18-year old strangers?

What makes people friends in college - or at work, church, or even volunteering at the local animal shelter - are the shared experiences. In college, people are living together in dorms, apartments or fraternity/sorority houses. They are going to class with the same people in their major, working together in campus activities and clubs. They are eating their meals with the same people, over and over. People spend hours and hours together every week/month/semester/year. It's rather insular in many circumstances.

I don't know what you are expecting to happen. Are you going to roam "college bars" and pubs looking for college coeds to drink with? I'm trying to envision you sitting in a hotel room, waiting for strangers you've never met to "call you out". Sure, you might meet people in a random night in a bar and hang out for a few hours, but nothing is going to give you, on holiday, the "American college experience". And honestly, if I was in college and some 28-year old guy visiting from another country suddenly wanted to "call shenanigans" with me, I'd run the other way.

I do encourage you to find places of interest - the mountains or beaches, museums, sports games, concerts, town fairs, the big cities, the cozy towns -wherever you plan to stay.

The reality is that those people are already friends when they go out for a crazy good drunken time at a bar. I'd highly encourage you to also have a friend along with. However the fact that you're Australian and have the accent means you're more likely to get attention assuming you're outgoing and willing to just walk up to people.

Where in the US are you going?

So let me ask you a question - in Australia, do you all box kangaroos and have koala bears as pets? Do you throw shrimp on the BBQ on the beach every night? Do you drink Fosters beer?

The movies are full of stereotypes and inconsistencies. You should know that.

I have it on good authority that Foster's is not nearly as popular as it used to be. Also my Aussie friend doesn't use nearly as much slang as this guy, but he's used to hanging out (online at least) with Americans so that might be why.

That's why I asked. I know that Fosters is pisswater in Australia. My point is he admits to getting all his info from movies, so I was tossing out some TV and movie stereotypes.

Yes, I'm aware of what you were doing. I was just amusing myself with taking it on a tangent. And most "beer people" say the same thing about Bud and Miller too.

I don't really know why someone wants to come here and get drunk by him(?)self. Go to the big city (pick one) and do it there and save some money.

would it be in bad taste to post bad Paul Hogan "this isn't a knife" jokes?
