stereotypes
I have heard so many things about how stuck up AKA's are and how they you can not be one if your not pretty enough. I live on the east coast and I don't know any AKA's personally so how do I find out if the sterotypes are true?

There are several stereotypes surrounding any fraternity or sorority, but they seem to be excessive around AKA and Deltas. (AKA's are the pretty, smart ones and Deltas are the rough, more ghetto ones). I know members of each. And I can tell you that in my personal experience, these women are all very intelligent, and I uldn't say any of them are prettier than others.
Don't let stereotypes prevent you from checking out all of your options.

SkeeeWeee to my sorors out there. Yes AKA
and Delta and Zeta and SGRHO's have stereotypes. Of course they hold some truth if you are open to it. AKA pretty, smart, Delta rough, ghetto, Zeta fat, hard core, Sigma fat, unattractive. But of course you can find variety in all the groups that's
why its a stereotype.

Bunny, you posted your statement as if those features aren't present in all organizations?!? Each and EVERY organization has some of each and believe me ALL AKA's aren't smart or/and pretty!! Why do people continue these sterotypes in the first place? Are those sterotypes that you believe in? I never hear of AKA's repeating the one about them being "hoes" and smoke out. Unless you like to keep these sterotypes alive, why repeat them??

Informer,
Are you bitter because you were rejected by my organization? It seems as though you have a deep dislike for AKAs. Every time I look, you are slithering around an AKA post.

Missy,
I have studied fraternities and sororities for 5 years and wrote a book on them. I can help you concerning stereotypes.

Missy & AKAtude-
check out Mr. Hatchett's website at www.antigreekbigot.com. Or go to his charming comment in the "hazing" thread...
seriously Missy - Don't listen to stereotypes. Sometimes they have grains of truth, but consider how small a grain is compared to a whole wheat field! Just keep your eyes & ears (and your mind)open as much as you can and use the knowledge YOU gather to form YOUR opoinions.

I would not listen to stereotypes that people tell me. Every chapter is different and is defined by the women who are in them. I lived with three 3 AKA's during school in different years, and although I recieved an invitation to join I wasn't ready to at that time. I have known women that are AKAs who are very outgoing, nice and intelligent women, the same goes for Deltas. On the other hand I have known women in both organizations who were mean, rude or arrogant. Hell, people have said those things about my sorority at one point or another.
The same can be said of any sorority because of the members they recruit. If you want to know more about them, check out their website and post some questions there or find a chapter in the area where you live. I am sure they would be more than happy to give you some information.

A Phinatic when you say you were given an invitation to join AKA but you were not ready at that time. I DON'T THINK SO. In order to recieve an invitation to join AKA you must attend an official interest meeting which is open to ANY qualified applicant (out of courtesy) who in attending shows that THEY have an interest in AKA. That's what you are refering to right? If you had recieved an invitation to join AKA (and you did not) then you would have gone thru this initial process prior to that (and done much more) with the hopes of being selected to go on line. And maybe then they would have gotten back with you if they were interested. NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND. We do not give out bids or verbal invitations and We Don't Recruit. I KNOW AKA DID NOT INVITE YOU TO JOIN. For the record. Let no one be decieved. THIS IS FOR CLARIFICATION PURPOSES ONLY.

Pink Bunny,
I think that I was misunderstood when I said I recieved an invitation, please let me clarify. YOUR chapter may not recruit and the organization as a WHOLE may mandate that you do not recruit, however, where I went to school, they DID recruit. Just not formally.
AKA wasn't (and still isn't) chartered on our campus, this left them open to do whatever they wanted and freed from following the regulations of the PHC and campus rules regarding rush and its publicity. They did not post any information regarding their informational meetings. The only way one would even know about the informational meeting was if they were invited or told by an exisiting AKA member.
In that respect, I was invited because they did not tell every woman that met the basic requirements about their meetings. I did not mean that I received a "bid" of sorts... especially since your entire process of member selection is different. I would never try to act like I got a "bid" (I don't know what else to call it) from your sorority and act like I didn't want it, like the sorority or whatever. To do so would be phony and completely undermine my loyalty to my sisters, something which I would not do. The last thing I am trying to do is "decieve" people. I am sorry if it came off that way.

um...really, okay. take a breather, everyone. who cares about what you are talking about. about stereotypes: look, if i am supposed to ghetto, or whatever, so be it. about recruitment: i was told by many-a-aka that pink would look great on my skin and with my beatuiful hazel eyes. but, that is with every color. my point is that my sorority, the illustrious DELTA SIGMA THETA does not concern itself with such idiotic sentiments. when it is all said and done, GOD will not take into account which stereotype you fell into or out of. give me a break. stereotypes are nothing but ignorant persons' ways to uplift their self-conscious souls. hail to my 22 founders!
